Rear shock time...Decisions and modification

    I bet. I've been looking at the other shocks...QA1 lists them as direct fit for 55-57 Impala and of all things, late model Ford F150. The only thing I'm concerned about is the compressed length being 2.5" more than stock. I'll need to get some different bump stops at the least.

    The mustang and full size ford apps are 1" longer (IE Afco 1043, QA1 FC7885) but I doubt that will make much of a difference unless I use a spacer on the stud end.

    The QA1 TC1610P looks like a nice fit. 14.5 compressed 23.5 extended. 140 ea though, single adjustable.

      I have the double adjustable versions of those. I purchased the coil over version with out the coil over and ran them with the cargo coils untill I could afford the springs annd stuff.

        What settings are you running them at? As much as I'd like to get adjustable, they are a tad pricey. Would the single adjustable work well?

          My suggestion to alleviate rear wheel lift in turning is much larger stabilizer bars.

            I have both adjustments set at 4 or 5 clicks from the lowest setting with the 225 lb coil over springs. I havent messed with the settings much because havent pushed the car much. Dont have to for the most part. I could use some more tweeking for shure .Already know a bit of differance in jounce and rebound might help but that might mostly be to compensate for lack of a rear sway bar.

              Hmm, guess I'll need to contact QA1 possibly and ask tech support One of the revalvable shocks wouldn't be too bad, as long as they cost signifigantly less than the single adjustable 1610's.

              Part of the problem is probably the variable rate rear springs for me.

              Blaze, I'd need a smaller rear bar (which won't help because of the shocks hitting full extension) or a MUCH larger front bar. I'm tempted to try a solid PI front bar, though the real issue is the shocks. Some 225 or better hypercoils would help too, but that still isn't the main issue at this point.

                  Stiffer rear stabilizer would help keep the car level. But you have to go pretty hume in size to get the full benefit. My roomate's CRX that he tracks all the time had the same problem. Used to lift that rear tire way off the road in a hard decel turn. He actually turned the axle tube into the stabilizer bar by welding arms onto the tube housing. As you can imagine that prtty much means ZERO roll. Now it rarely ever lifts, and he runs wide R compound tires now with race brakes.

                  My second advice, DON'T BOTHER WITH REVALVABLE SHOCKS! Go look at the revalving kit price, then you'll see why. After that price you might as well just get adjustable ones.

                    Johnnie, a stiffer rear bar would do that, but it will make the car oversteer more than it already does. I have that giant front Addco for the newer panther, but the fitment isn't great. My car needs stiffer springs (that are straight rate) longer shocks (or modify the mounting position) As we have discussed before, swaybars are more for fine tuning than what I am dealing with. If I dropped the wagon the stock length shocks would be OK. I really don't want to.

                    2 revalvables and a kit would be more than $550? The D/A's that Turbo has are listed on summit for 277 bucks EACH. The single adjustables are 140. The revalvabes would be equal to the D/A's.

                      They are the HD overloads. Kinda feel like the variable rate after you load the trunk with a couple cilinder heads. Ride height is about the same as the variable ones. I had them in the tan car and the variables in the blue car liked the feel of the non variable better.

                        Maybe I'll swap out my rear shocks sometime. My issue is that I become limited in my choices because I want to keep my auto-level suspension intact. Not a huge selection of performance oriented air shocks. I also don't drive super aggressively so its probably not a big deal. The air actually helps ruin the handling characteristics anyway since it shifts from bag to bag on cornering.

                          You need to get a gate valve. So that the only time the air shocks are linked is when you are airing them up. I need to do the same. If I do find what I want to do this, I'll let you know and see if you want to do the same.

                            Gadget, wonder what would happen if you used standard shocks and used airbags in the rear coils for the load leveling.
