Fresh transmission rebuild, still no second gear? Help please!

Me and my neighbor went through every bit of this transmission and to no avail it still does not go into second gear. Here's a picture of the last problem of why it wouldn't shift..
There was NO material left, both the overdrive band and the frictions were worn to the metal, including one being split in half, and one steel being completely broken in half.

Everything is brand new in the transmission. We did not touch anything in the valve body but replace the check balls and gaskets. The governers screen was changed and it moves freely. All the linkages are right where they should be,and I have the bushing for the throttle valve linkage installed. Still no second gear. Is it a possibility there is a sticking 1-2 shift valve in the valve body? Since we did not do anything to them?

Is the TV pressure correct? If its too high, it will not shift out of first gear unless you really wind it up. Make sure the rod is conneced properly at both ends and that the bushing up at the throttle body end is intact. For whatever reason, TV rod cars fail with the pressure full open, which causes a very late shift. Also, make sure that the tang from the TV lever inside the transmission is properly engaged to whatever it supposed to work, and make sure the main shift linkage is properly engaged. You'd sort of know the shift linkage was wrong though because it wouldn't come out of gear. Beyond that, my best suggestion is to get hold of the Ford powertrain book and look through the AOD diagnostic process to figure out why it doesn't work. Maybe you didn't sacrifice the proper number of chickens or do the right voodoo dance or something. Automatics rely on that sort of thing to function correctly.

But what is your own opinion what it could be? Because everything is how it is supposed to be. All the linkages and rods are right, and I know they are making contact. When we brought it to aamco for a diagnosis he jacked up the rear end after taking it for a test drive when it wouldn't shift, jacked it up, and put it in drive and it was shifting, under a load it would not shift because there was no material on the steels and frictions for second gear, and the overdrive band was burned up. What caused the issue was that the tv rod didn't have a bushing and a pin when I bought it, and the damage was already done. The transmission has been rebuilt before I owned it as well.

Like I said, I've touched everything in this transmission except the valves in the valve body.

well, you can always get a $100 stock rebuilt valve body from silverfox. Buy some peace of mind there.
        Governor valve is free?

I'm beginning to believe the voodoo and chicken blood theory, btw. I've only built two AODs now and both had phantom problems; one I threw parts at and never did pin down what fixed it, the other I threw an entirely fresh core at because I gave up on the one we'd rebuilt.

If the bands were broken and smoked, theres a fair chance there was some crap in the fluid, which may have gotten sucked up into the valve body. If the valve body wasn't cleaned out to make sure everything moves like its supposed to, that could explain it. Also, I know the valve body is very particular about being installed correctly. If the gasket isn't in there right, or if you didn't tighten it to the proper torque spec using the correct torque pattern, it tends to not work correctly.

use a torque ratchet that you TRUST.
And by that, I mean not harbor freight, and probably not even craftsman... borrow a quality one from a technician if you must.
Some peoples' ideas of 25-30 inch pounds is not always the same as whatever our institution of weights and measurements' official ideas are.

Well we didn't take it apart, all we did was replace the checkballs, and both the gaskets. and cleaned up the outside of it.

and that looks like the 3/4 clutch bands shot reminds me of what happens when the trans is low on pressure from having no grommet....i realise your dealing with a rod, but just saying thats what it reminds me of
