difference between 8.5 and 8.8 axles?

Hi everyone, I'm sure this is somewhere in the archives, but the search function has been so slow for me that I figured this might be faster.

What is the difference between the ford 8.5 and 8.8 axles? I have an 8.8 out of a mustang (1990) with new 3.55 gears and a refreshed posi> I plan to pull out the ring and pinion and trac loc carrier and install w new bearings etc into my 8.5 rear in my 1984 wagon. Any issue with this?

    Thanks!

no issues, the axel housings are the same. the difference is in the ring gear/carrier size.the 8.8 being that much bigger. aslong as you are swapping the carrier/ring & pinon at the same time, you will have no issues. even the bearings are the same for both diff sizes. I upgraded my 2.73 8.5 to a 3.73 8.8, in my lincoln this spring.

I don't think I've come across any 8.5's in my time...do they look the same as an 8.8?...or are they closer in relation to the old 2 or 3 year only WER rear end from the late 60's?

great - so no tricky parts etc? Standard 8.8 install kit, stock axles and the 8.8 r&P and carrier will bolt right in?

yep. as mentioned, the only difference is the ring and pinion itself. you can bolt the 8.8 ring and pinion in and use all the same 8.8 hardware. I think the traction lock that went in Slymer's car was actually out of a car with an 8.5 R&P.

So out of curiosity, will a trac lok out of an 8.8 bolt into an 8.5?

I belive scottmang said the carriers are the same but, not 100% on that. It would be a great time for a gear set swap though
