    Modern Axle Grease...Blah!

I have a tube of axle grease in my grease gun. It’s starting to break down and leak out the ends. It’s been so bad I had to put it in an old baking pan so it wouldn’t leak out all over in my tool box. This is the 2nd tube to do this. These are not no-name grease I’m buying. In fact I made sure to get one of the best (I thought) I could buy from O’Reilly’s the last time, but it still breaks down and leaks out.

When I was working on cars on a regular basis in my 20’s, I never had axle grease separate and turn into a liquid before...tube or tub. Its kind a like the separation of sour cream, when you get liquid forming on the top after a while.

I’m at work right now so I don’t know if it’s Valvoline or Quaker State. One was the 1st one to separate and one is the other separating now.

Does anyone else have this problem? I’m worried this stuff is breaking down in my wheel bearings and grease fittings too. Is there company making old fashion grease now-a-days that doesn't separate?

The EPA more than likely has something to do with regulating grease. My grease does the same thing.

Lucas does the same thing (I use the "red and tacky" tubes)... but I have no issues with what's been used. I think it has more to do with the crap quality of my grease gun and the fact I keep it in the garage to get hot and allow it to flow through the seems of the gun.

Probably just leaks a bit more down in the south as my garage usually does not get really hot.

Royal Purple. I haven't noticed any leakage; but I'll check when I get home today.

Took apart the grease gun and it's Lucas Red 'N' Tacky. Like hearing Royal Purple may be the way to go. Hope there's others that don't leak/separate!

I have Valvoline SynTech at work and it also separates. I have taken to keeping a rag under the grease gun so it doesn't drool all over the place.

I've only had it do it in the grease gun. Open a new tube, and its fine. Put it in the grease gun and a week or two later it's dripping out the back. I only use about a tube a month, so it sits around a bit. It doesnt seem temperature related either. I've been having it happen all winter, and the warehouse isn't exactly a sauna in the winter time.

I meant in the grease gun. Forget the last brand I got, it was purple, but not royal purple. It's fine so far. Synthetic stuff.
