    2G re-clocking?

    Hi All,

Recently I got stuck in my 91 GM and my alternator was replaced.

The mechanic replaced it with another 2G alternator. (No time to upgrade to 3G).

My question is: Can I reclock a 2G by unbolting the three bolts and just turning it?

I ask because I still want to do some wire upgrades.

    Thanks in advance.

You should be able to, however sometimes these damn things get so stuck together nothing short of good beating with a sledgehammer will make them seperate the two pieces.

Its where you rotate the back plate so the connections point a different way.

No idea if its possible, never tried. The pictures in the shop manual for taking it apart don't seem to show that you can't just re-clock the thing.

I have never had a 2g apart, but the alterators I have taken apart usually have all the electrical connections in the rear half. Provded that the case isn't clearanced anywhere on the inside of the front half, and the bolt holes will still line up, it should work just fine.

I suggest you call a local shop that specializes in rebuilding alternators/starters/etc and ask them how much they would charge you. If it isn't doable they will probably say so right off the bat. If it is uber cheap, it is probably easy.

Now having said all that, if you are going to this much trouble, go on ebay or to the local u-pull it and grab a 3g alternator and do the upgrade. You will be better off in the long run.

I pulled them apart before. Now just remember, that when you take them a part, you remove the voltage regulator and the springs too. Otherwise they'll pop out and might get tangled in something or may get lost.

Couldn't you just mod the original alternator bracket? Maybe drill a bigass hole for another bolt in a different spot?

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to do this? I didn't know what reclocking an alt was either till I read description. What would be the reasonign for this?

Only the adjusting hole (top) is movable, to tighten the belt. You can't just turn the alternator around and mount it.

The reason I want to do this is to get the two plugs away from the engine block, and its heat.

If get hold of a pic of a 2G, you'll see what i'm talking about.

                      Happy Thanksgiving to All

You can reclock an alternator... When I bought the last one at a local alternator rebuild shop, he had to reclock the one he had, to fit my car... on the 100 amp ones.... it is a bitch... he had to seperate the halves to turn it, which meant he had to put the brushes back in, which are a bitch to do... Good advice? go to an alternator shop and get them to do it... Tom...

                          Thanks. It worked.
I removed the regulator and saw what you meant by the springs and brushes.

I never separated the front and back halves, just slid them over after removing the 3 bolts.

Now the 2 plugs are away from the engine block and on top where they can be seen.

Thanks for all your help, guys!!

Yeah the springs fly out when the regulator is removed.
Glad to hear you got what you wanted done.
