    power antenna (ugh)

    Dear Panthers,
Scott installed my NOS power antenna maybe two years ago and it failed. PeteV8 hasn't got another one.

I could replace the power antenna with a regular antenna but I like looking over the big open hood when I'm not using the radio.

Has anyone successfully fixed or modified a 1989 power antenna?

Hey mang. What exactly is wrong? If the motor isn't working it's as simple as replacing the motor. I've done a few with the assembly still in the car. You have to remove the inner fender well to even get near the assembly. Then two phillips head screws hold the motor on. Mind the washers under the screws, and then you can pull the motor. Unplug the two wire harness and replace teh motor. I can harvest you a motor if you'd like. I'm hoping to hit the junkyard this weekend for some random stuff.

Motor's fine. But it won't pick up a radio signal.

Same here... poor signal reception. I broke the antenna mast, replaced it with a new one, and still get intermittent signal reception.

maybe consider an on glass antenna? like the ones we use on boats. not sure if it would work or not, just a suggestion.
          kinda like this one.

I've rung it out with an ohmmeter, its open from the antenna mast to the cable. It somehow loses connection from the point where the cable enters the antenna assembly, and where it makes contact with the mast. I couldn't figure out how exactly that happened. I'm guessing maybe some sort of a spring contact or similar does the job, but it doesn't seem to come apart right there. I tried fixing one on Scott's Vic, and after 2 antennas, I gave up and put a fixed whip on. Tried to come up with something on the wagon as well, but it seemed to be dead in the same way, and I still have no idea how to fix it. Towncar antenna assemblies are of course totally different, which figures because I had a good one of those available.

Does the base of the antenna (where the cable attaches to the mast) have continuity to the back of the radio?

                Will this 94 fit?

It doesn't unplug on his car, its one solid wire from the antenna all the way in. Make it quite a bit more of a pain in the ass to change. Not sure if you've ever fished the antenna cable from the radio all the way out, but it involves some contortion.

No idea if newer antennas fit. One thing that I can say is that the top of the fender on a 92+ car is slanted down, where on a box its basically flat. I'm thinking a newer one won't fit properly.

Yes I have, (not fun) and if the cable itself is in one piece ( no opens in the cable) you can change the motor assembly without having to pull the cable through. There's a screw at the base of the antenna assembly's metal tube (where the mast is bolted to). You can unscrew that and separate the motor assembly and the pipe. There's a little glue on there but that can easily be broken off. Then the motor part of the assembly can be removed completely while the pipe and cable are still in the car. Would be better if the mast was removed beforehand since that gets in your way when you're trying to separate the two parts of the antenna assembly.

                      Dear Panthers,
FYI. I talked to the guy at antennas.com yesterday and he said there's a hairline wire inside the sleeve which probably got broken on my antenna (as Thaine suggested). No way of fixing it.
