    Smoke from door panel!!!

I got in my 'squire tonight & smelled something funny. That's when I noticed an acrid smoke eminating from the window switch panel. It stopped as soon as I noticed it. I skipped the rest of my errands, drove it straight home & disconnected the bat. I now have a new project to add to the list for tomorrow......

Was the switch hot? I have overheated switches because there was so much resistance in a window motor I was trying to close.

No, it didn't feel hot. It happened when I started the car, I wasn't even using the window or lock switches. I'm going to pull the switch panel tomorrow & see if anything looks burnt.....

you will prolly find when you take the arm rest off that the connection block for the switches is burnt. i had to replace the connection pig tail and switch on my lincoln with a junkyard harness when i first got it. water was what caused mine to screw up. leaving or driving with the window down will cause water to drip right on into the switch.

Yeah that'll short it right out. It might be fine now that it's dry. Was it raining last night?

I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
No it wasn't raining, it was like 32 deg. so I hadn't even opened the window. the only door lock that doesn't work is the drivers, so I had not touched that panel all evening. I'll let you know what I find......

Wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic but if you stop something before it gets too bad (fire) and fix the problem it's true.

Are there any fuses blown in the panel?

I took the assy apart & found no real prob other than an acrid smell. there was a small bit of black residue where the drvr side front sw connects, I wiped it off w/my finger.

It appears warped in the pic but it is not.

The switch also appears to be fine.

I reassembled it & ran all the windows up & down repeatedly. I also locked & unlocked the doors over & over.

I imagine the resistance can be measured across the motor
connector, any idea what it should be?

                  Thanks

This would've only been the case if you had been using the window or something else. Disregard that comment.

If it was deteriorating internally, the measured resistance might show a deviation from "normal" (if there is such a thing w/my cars LOL).
It worked smoothly when I was testing it though.
