Nah, in that second pic that's just some wood flakes. I was flushing the heater core on a piece of pressed wood so it wouldn't get dirty. I'm going to try the bicycle pump trick too. I got one with a small gauge on it.

Alright, so I did the bicycle pump trick and took the black wrap stuff off. I got no hissing, no air bubbles, and it looks like the heater core held the pressure. I counted to around 30 sec to call it good each time I got it pumped up. The tests were done with the heater core laying submerged in a big pan of water and pressurized to around 10-15 psi. The gauge on the pump reads in increments of ten so I kept it in between 10-20. I didn't go over 17-18 and also my finger was crammed down in the other tube. If this is supposed to be like finding a hole in a bicycle tire tube, then I'd say it's good...with caution. What do you guys think?

dunno mang. When I had a leaky one in my car, it clearly showed a fine stream of bubbles coming out of the core. It may have been a bad hose or something, or maybe one of those strange leaks that only happens when its warmed up but either way, I'd put a new one in.

Yep, that's how I thought mine was gonna look when I pulled it out. That left me puzzled.

                Does the ac work?
