    Tiggie's 1976 F100 Parts Truck

Probably a fairly short lived thread here but I thought you all might want to hear about it.

Bought this turd today. It's a parts truck for my F250. It's nicer than my F250 but I need to do F250 things. Was fairly well equipped Ranger XLT. FE/automatic (like my F250).

These are the listing photos. Parked it at my dad's since he has more space. Will grab more photos later. Next step is to see if Mr. FE wants to run. Someone tore into the front accessory drive... no idea why. The distributor is gone as well as the power steering pump.

That looks pretty damn decent! Be sure to give those stickers on the rocker cover a gander for the ole "D6" if original engine status matters.

I feel sheepish about making a thread for that Mark III, didn't expect it would be so short lived.

Dunno what purpose does a parts truck thread serve, but if you're actually gonna post something here, why not? Obviously I won't be bummed if the "parts truck" accidentally becomes a project instead.

I feel a bit sheepish about having the thread on my BMW deleted, mainly because it said things I didn't say to the buyer. I mean I wasn't lying, but I might've omitted certain "features". But the buyer was a dickhead know-it-all yuppie, who ended up threatening to sue me later on. Obviously it was completely baseless and the know-it-all dipshit was either a complete idiot, or bit off more than he could chew and tried to back out of the deal by threats and bullshit.

Bummer, I'm pretty sure I had a couple nice pics in that thread that I have deleted from my PC.

Whoa, I missed all of this drama.. Probably the latter, that seems to be the popular route these days. Sorry you had to deal with all of that, could he have taken you to court over it? Here in Michigan, all car sales are "As is." So if the buyer's butt ends up hurting, it's their pain alone.

Sorry Tiggie for going completely off topic
I'll hide my response to Derek in a spoiler box, that'll make everything better, right?

Cool looking truck. Been a parts truck for a few owners now by the looks of it.

I don't think y'all will hurt the parts truck thread with Bimmer chat! That buyers sounds like he got a bad case of buyers remorse. I liked that car. Or least the look of it.

This is parked at my dad's. I'm not happy about buying a new toy and not being able to play with it.

I have a little history on this truck. It was purchased in 2003 by my dad's neighbor, a fellow who is known to use things... not particularly carefully. I wouldn't say abuse but definitely a case of if it got a dent, no biggie. I have the paperwork for a new engine and transmission in 2003. Over $4000. He drove it until 2008, about 15,000 miles total per the odometer and paperwork. Said it used too much gas. Guy told dad it kept cutting off randomly, so he parked it and got another one (a 79 with a 300).

It sat for a long time. Neighbor dude 1 sold it to the guy I bought it from (neighbor dude 2). Dude 2 was going to use it for a parts truck for his 78 F250 4x4 but decided it was too decent. I have no such issues!

The parts missing are mostly in the bed luckily. Lots of good stuff here with the Ranger XLT trim, A/C mostly intact (minus compressor). Hopefully the engine and trans are runners. Someone might want the power front disc setup for their bumpside. Of course it has the 9" rear but I don't know what ratio yet.

Hope to get some time this weekend to dig into the engine. Will check compression first. Then throw a distributor in it and see what happens.

Jeez. I think you can do that here too, maybe. That or the law changed. I remembered after I posted that my dad took a seller to court over a car he bought used and won. This would be my '89 Firebird which was just six years old at the time. It burned oil bad (valve stem seals) and dad didn't notice.

I wouldn't have responded to the guy at all, might've even left his message unread.

Had a couple hours to play with my new toy.

First order of business was to install a passenger window to replace the broken one. I don't like wet interior in even junkers, and a $20 window at the junkyard is worth it so I don't have a seal. Truck actually has a nice newer seat, clean carpet, and smells decent.

Next I reinstalled some hood hinges and got the hood back it on. Again, I want to keep the engine dry as possible and a $10 hood hinge was worth it, even for a parts truck.

Someone nabbed the battery cables. The two, plus the starter cable. Luckily I had some in stock to throw on there.

Guy had drained the oil. Engine is clean outside so I think he may have washed it and drained the oil as a precaution (or necessity). I put new oil in it and a filter (both included with truck) and primed it since the distributor was out. It has a little over 50 psi on the gauge. Cranked it over by hand as well. It was fairly easy since the spark plugs were already out.

Threw a battery in it. No sparks... that's good. But also nothing. No headlights, nothing. I think the fusible link is burned at the solenoid. Also got nothing by crossing the solenoid. Wired the starter straight to the battery. Nothing. Pulled the starter and threw in an extra, which proved to work off the battery but not through the solenoid. Chalk this up to a bad solenoid and bad fusible link and bad starter. I thought this was supposed to have some good parts on it?!?

Checked compression. 125-150psi on 2-7. 1 and 8 are dead, zero. Suspecting stuck valves. Truck was parked in 2008. Will dig into this next. I do want to try to make this run. The engine is my F250 is a smooth runner but has essentially no oil pressure hot, so I hoping this doesn't go the way of the starter situation.

Engine block casting is C5AE-A which Google says is a 390. Doesn't mean it's a 390 crank, however. Will check next time to see if the stroke is 3.5 (360) or 3.78 (390) or 3.98 (410). Truck originally had a 360 per the VIN, but this definitely not the original engine to the truck.

Yeeah I had suspected the "I put all this money into it but parked it because gas prices were terrible" story was B.S. I really hope you've just got stuck valves, but buying a rebuilt/new engine without hearing it run isn't something I'm comfortable with because "rebuilt" leaves me with more questions than comfort. The "left it with drained oil" is odd too. Makes me suspect they were preparing to pull the engine, but lost interest...

100% with you on that. Rebuilt is a scary term.

Had the morning off work so I screwed around with the starter. I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I got it to spin but it's really slow. Won't kick out the starter drive. Blew it all apart. Brushes and commutator look fine. Cleaned it all. Threw it back together and it worked okay for a few hits but not reliably well (kept going back to slow speed).

Hook up two batteries & hit it with 24V, bet it'll spin much faster then.

The starter on my daily has been slow since it was thrown on, guess it was a reman. I finally replaced it with a new unit after a year or so dealing with it not working when heat soaked. Man, what a difference! Sounds like it's spinning 3x faster than before.

Few more hours diagnosing this today. Valves are not stuck. Pushrods not bent. Engine is spotless under the valve covers but had some crusties on the rocker arm and pushrod around the breather. I remedied that.

Put air on cylinder 1 and 8 (the problem cylinders) and it blows out the carb. I assume the valve seat might be crusty. Next time I'm going to try to make it run and hope that it blows out the crud, if that's indeed the issue. Otherwise it's going to just be a V6 and I'll pull the heads if I need the engine in the future.

Other little details. Stroke says it is a 390, not 360. Rocker shaft assemblies ($) and pushrods are new and not remans. One head is a C8AE-H, garden variety truck and car head. The other marking has been obscured but from a different foundry (Dearborn vs Cleveland). The valve springs are double, whereas my 360 has singles.

Weird that it's got mis-matched heads. If it was me, I'd follow your plan too- just get it to run and throw some RPM at it. The valves will probably come around, not 100%, but not a V-6of8 either.
