First Time at the Track

This was at Rock Falls raceway in September. The mods are gears, stall, exhaust, and a crap mail order tune with lock-up issues. A real local dyno tune is in order and I'm doing a Cobra Intake swap, pullies, and MAF kit with cone filter in preparation for 13s this next spring. We'll see where it goes after that. A lot of people get discouraged with these heavy cars we have and resort to a blower or nitrous. I would like to see how far I can get N/A before I give up. :smirk:

I have 4.10 gears, a 3800 stall by Circle D with a 40,000 gvw Tru Cool trans cooler, and the exhaust is kooks 3/4 length headers with an x-pipe and stainless mufflers out the back. I can't remember the brand of the mufflers, but they are some sort of off- brand. All the catalytic converters have been removed.

Hm .... foot in mouth disease ... my first response was made before watching the videos, so I naturally assumed the vehicle in question was a box Vic. Very surprising to see Mark VIII videos posted here.

I've seen him post once or twice on another forum, but he doesn't frequent that often at all. I am pretty sure he runs a blower and nitrous and has extensive engine work done. By now, it may be a 5.0, who knows.

Well, I'm trying anyways. Power to weight ratio is definitely not in my favor lol. The stall range I chose because of a suggestion to me by a very knowledgeable member over at another forum who has the n/a beast I wish I had lol. Due to the lower torque output of the DOHC, he suggested a stall in the range of 3600-3800. I opted to go for the higher stall to give me the exaggerated effect and just went with it. Honestly, on the street the difference is very noticeable unless I am driving like a grandma. At half throttle the tach instantly climbs to around 3000-3500rpm and will shift consistently at those rpms without a lot of fluctuation on the tachometer. That is when you really begin to notice the stall. The question of it being a streetable converter has been brought up by a few. Contrary to what some have said about it being too high, I have observed the temperature at which the trans fluid temperature is at using my buddy's Scan Gauge. We drove the car in a very spirited manner and the temperature never went past 156 degrees. I believe some converters can be different to that aspect depending on design. But either way, my rule of thumb has always been, if your trans temp is running at or above the temperature of your engine coolant, you are looking at possible converter failure. FWIW, I am also running a smaller Hayden stacked-plate cooler in-line with the Tru-Cool. As long as the trans temp is down, I don't see a problem. The car is a daily driver once spring comes around.

Just in ending I would like to say that this is really the only hot rod project I have going on at the moment and I tend to get it out there no matter what forum I am part of. People like to see other people's stuff and so I honor that and we all show and tell. So far, I have enjoyed seeing a lot of impressive rides on here and maybe one day the Town Car will be part of this fun after the cosmetical stuff. I hope you all can still welcome me as much of a red-headed stepchild that I may be. At least it's not a Camaro, right?

Interesting street vid. Looks like you were going 75ish at the end of the video? Seems you got up to speed with very little drama. I've driven a couple of stock Mark VIIIs, but my recollection of their part-throttle acceleration isn't all that distinct.

Oh my oh my guys. I really screwed up on this post. Please note that the "Easy Drive" video is actually a video of the 1989 Town Car and NOT the Mark VIII. The cars must be quite similar under lighter throttle because I confused the two! LOL The other video was on my previous cell phone and I have switched providers so I don't have it anymore.

Ah, that could possibly explain the speedo needle pointing higher than I expected. Or was that actually 75mph on a 120mph readout? Not familiar with most of the newer stuff ....

The Townie has an 85 mph speedo, the Mark has a 140. Another reason why I don't understand how I confused the two lol. :smirk:
