      It also looks pretty good to black out only the chrome and leave the fake woodgrain.

          That's a different approach. I think I kind of like it.

          One oddball question I still haven't had answered: When I tried selective blacking (and re-silvering with crap silver craft paint) on my original Mercury dash, I was using black Krylon, and it proceeded to melt the fake-wood decal wherever it came in contact with it. How does one avoid this when deliberately painting the decal, or do other paints just have less-harsh effects when applied?

            I used plastic paint, prepped by sanding with 400 grit. It fisheyed in a couple spots, but you can avoid it if you clean it with wax and grease remover or paint thinner. For the silver I used that aluminum paint from rustoleom, I had a quart laying around so I decided to brush it.
