    Hello from NYC!

    Hey all,

I am new to this forum and have already found some great info that helped me fix some problems I've been having with my 'new' car. I have always been a Mustang enthusiast and my first car was a '88 GT that had a 5.0. That was the car that led to my obsession of mustangs and Fords in general. In 2005 I was fortunate enough to order a brand spankin' new 2005 Mustang GT (black, black, black) that I use mostly as my weekend car. Don't get me wrong, its not really too much of a garage baby and I do drive it and have plenty of fun while doing so. Being that I didn't want that car to get damaged going to work and running errands etc., I also picked up a 1995 Ford Escort as my general daily driver. Unfortunately I kept telling myself that since I bought it with low miles (30k) that it was a great dd but I didn't really like driving it because of the four banger under the hood and well it....it was an Escort lol. It held up for the time I had it and didn't really have any major problems with it at all. Just a few weeks ago one of my neighbors decided that he was going to get rid of his 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis LS and just on a whim, I asked him if I could take it for a spin. That was all it took for me to fall in love with it so I sold the Escort and bought the Grand Marq. It is in absolutely beautiful condition. I'm not sure what the color is called but its a very, very light shade of beige that's in excellent condition with a Black fabric top. The paint is all factory and since the car spent some years in FL its got a very minimal amount of rust which I plan on taking care of quickly so it doesn't get out of hand. It's got the turbine wheels all around including the full size spare in the trunk all with new rubber. The interior also has a beige velour upholstery with what seems to be all the options except the auto climate control. Everything on the car works great inside n out and alot of the parts have just been changed according to my (trusted) neighbor. The biggest problem with the car is that it has 120k on the odometer and has a rear main seal leak. The leak isn't terrible and is probably less than a quart a month so I'm probably just going to keep parking it on the street until I can work up the nerve to change the seal which I really am not that excited about. I'm very adamant about checking the oil and doing changes regularly so ill just keep adding oil when it needs for a while. Anyway sorry for the long post but I just wanted to introduce myself and let you guys know how unbelievably happy I am with my first Grand Marquis and most likely not my last. I'll get more pictures up in my gallery soon but in the meantime let me know what you guys think of the new ride, and if you have any advice that a noob should know. Thanks!

    P.S.
I haven't been driving the Mustang AT ALL since I got the Merc except when I needed to make a parts run. It's just such an awesome car and drives like a dream.

Hah, Absolutely! I already changed the yellowed headlight that was plastic with a new glass lense. The high beams are on order, I'm just waiting for them to come in.

95% chance it is not the rear main seal.......the rear intake gaskets turn to rock and sometimes fall out and the leak from the top down, also the valve cover gaskets leak........take care of those items first.

        and welcome to gmn!

          Nice car!

Yes, Lincolnmania is correct. Lots of places these cars can leak. Rear main is rare!

When I bought my car the rear main was leaking. Changed it, pita. The cause however was a cloged PCV filter. Change that little thing.

Great thanks for the advice guys...thats exactly why I came to this forum. I will check all those things out and report back. Should I be worried about the high mileage? Anything I should look into specifically?

High mileage at 120k? Mine's got 182k on the clock and is a daily driver. Yours ain't even broken in yet.

Looks nice and clean. Welcome to GMN.

my 88 has almost 139K on it... runs like a top (though it does show it's age from time to time).

my 93 has ~210K on it... but it's on it's second motor now. Note to self: don't replace the valve seals on the older 4.6L engines without first making sure the valve guides are not worn out.

Thanks for all the compliments and suggestions for the oil leaking problem guys. I am going to tackle the lower intake gasket and the valve cover gaskets. Anything else I should do while I'm in there? I know it's not too deep but I figured I'd atleast change the PCV valve while it's easily accessible. Any other important things to do while it's apart? Also, there is a vacuum valve that I think might be EGR related on the front of the upper intake near the TB. Does anyone know what that part is called and if it is important? I popped the cap off which revealed a foam cup filter which is all gunked up and torn and I would like to get a replacement. Does the whole valve need to be changed? Thanks in advance for any info you guys could help me with.

I'd do as many vacuum lines as possible (like all of them). Do PCV, grommet and the screen underneath along with the hoses. As for the "foam filter" you are talking about I believe that part is no longer made and I have never seen a replacement. Maybe you can match up a home a/c foam filter that is close??? Bobby
