    troubleshoot ignition '87 302

After my recent breakdown in the '87 mgm, with a 302, it starts and runs fine. The fault, according to the firing indicator, was no spark, which returned after overnight sitting and cooling. How can I figure out what intermittently failed? I don't want to wait until I'm stranded again. My guess is coil, stator, pickup or TFI.

    Pickup or TFI would
    Be what I look at.

If you can press a cold lunch box freezer pack on it for a few min then it comes back to life when you start it, voila...

TFI , coil or pickup is one of the failure points.

TFI first, pickup second. The coils rarely die, but either of the distributor parts can and do fail in this way. The TFI probably goes more often than the pickup.

Yep, only time I've ever had a problem with a coil was when I bought my 91 MGM. The post had corroded off after the car had been sitting down for 6+ years.

Nick, all of the parts are working now. If I add cold and they still work, what have I learned? What if I add heat, perhaps with a hair blower, while idling, to see if it'll stall?
