    changing brake rotors and wheel bearings on the front of a 1991 GM

    Hello,
    I'm gonna start a front brake job today since a cold front came thru and dropped our temperature to 95 degrees. I bought the Eline slotted rotors with hubs and studs, new inner and outer wheel bearings, grease seals and disc pads. Is there a best way to pack the bearings with grease? I used to do it by packing the grease in the bearing by the palm of the hand. How tight should I tighten the nut on the spindle holding the bearings in place?

    I used to work the grease into each roller on the bearing, but I use one of those bearing packers for grease guns now. Lots faster, but bigger mess. Meh... I like it. as for the torque...

    Tighten nut to 17-25 Ft/Lbs while rotating wheel.
    Back off 1/2 turn and retighten to 10-15 in/Lbs.

    note the second one is INCH-pounds

        meh... I know how to massage Google to give me the info I want. (actually looked those torque specs up on Autozone.com)

          I like that grease gun bearing packer as well. Really forces the grease into the bearing from the inside out.

            How do you go by In lbs if torque wrenches only do ft lbs???

              HAW! I looked up small torque wrenches on Harbor Fraught and their smallest only goes to 20 in/lbs. I suspect strongish finger tight is OK but take my advice at your own peril

                That's crazy, There has got to be an easier way rather than going by In lbs (I guess hand tighten)???

                    Yeah I know that. Just unsure how precise you would have to re tighten I guess with 1 ft -lb ...

                      for inch-lbs... definitely within 1 ft-lbs and preferably less than that if the setting is less than 120 inch pounds

                        people actually torque wheel bearings with tools? I always just make them finger tight and call it good enough. these want to be just tight enough that there isn't slop in the parts, but no more.

                          This Park Torque wrench is a nice little wrench. There are a couple of this model currently on ebay for a little less at auction.

                            wheel bearings I tighten it down real good to seat everything, then back off and use the spin method... just enough to hold it all on and make is stop within 2-3 rotations.

                            valve cover bolts... when acura says 9 ft-lbs... they mean it. I snapped those bolts so fast (probably at 15-20 ft-lbs). I just snugged the rest on there (this was about 6 years ago) 3 broken bolts and 5 holding snug... had no leaks when we traded it in for the vic about 9 months later.
