    255/65 16 Tires For Rear

I'm thinking about a pair of 255/65 16's for the rear of my '87. It has '98+ 16" steelies with cargo coils.

Do you think this size is too big? Seems to be the most economical way to fill the big rear wheel wells....$200 shipped for a new pair on ebay. The car has a big 2.5" h-pipe that hangs so really can't lower it. I was then thinking 235/70 16 for the front.

That's pretty damn big sidewall wise. Stock 16's would be 225/60/16. I run 235/60/16 on my 85 on all 4 corners and enjoy it. Also run 255/50/16's on my 89 and that is a killer combo.

I would not go taller than stock. Worse handling and you'll basically have to get a truck tire.

As an aside, 255 on rim meant for 215 tires won't help grip or handling much. Too much of the tire will be out past the rim.

255 60 16''s are 2" taller. That will make the car more sluggish to drive as it changes the overall axle ratio. Your speedo will also read ~5mph slower than actual speed. In other words taller tires is like changing to a lower gear ratio 2.73's instead of 3:55's (not the actual percieved change, just as an example, too lazy to do the math right now).

What you should do is go to tire manufacturers website, or if tirerack carry's the tires you like, look through the spec list looking for a tire that is roughtly 27" in diameter which is what the stock diameter is. I would not go up or down by more than 1/2" or so. Then look at what tire size it happens to be. You will soon discover that you might just need to change brands or model of tire to find something suitable.

that's the problem, lack of proper height 16" tires.......235/60/16 is the biggest 60 series tire they make. i have seen 255/65/16's, those are suv tires, very tall!

I don't know enough to say anything about the subject, but if you're looking for a good way to compare tire sizes try the tool on here: http://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp.

Exactly....I have 235-60-16 on there now and also on my '98...that size looks just right on the '98 but a bit small on the '87. Probably will get some standard rear springs from Rock auto to bring the rear down a bit....or go to 15" steelies with a tall tire. Biggest passenger tire I ever had was 255-70-15 on my '69 Mark III and that size looked perfect on it. (why did I ever sell that car )
