    Trac-loc rebuild ?

So i'm gonna put some 4.30 gears in my car for the time being to satisfy me until I get the other engine built. So I would like to do a quick rebuild on my trac-loc and tighten it up because its getting weak and kicks out every now and then. So where is a good place to get a rebuild kit from? Also maybe a how to article for a performance rebuild, hints, tips, and suggestions welcome.

nevermind on how to I found one http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...build-how.html in case anyone else is interested.

So anyway good place to buy one?

It's the 8-disc mod....yay. There's at least two guys here who have done that....Tom and I....and possibly some others, but I can't remember who.

If you want loads of extra fun, buy an 'S' spring for a F150 4x4....and try to install THAT one....

I did one in a 9.75" rear not long ago. Simple and easy. But that didn't use an s spring, it used some conical springs behind the clutches (which were a bitch until we figured out how to compress them). But you don't have to deal with those.

Measure your old steels and frictions to see how bad they are.

My car has the 8 disc, works much better than whatever previous instructions we used. It was originally rebuilt with the 6, but shimmed according to some BS directions and using the F150 spring. It clunked and banged and generally sucked. 8 frictions and the standard spring, plus shimming it so it actually fit together without having to beat the ever loving crap out of the side gears to make them go in position made things much better.

Wouldn't hurt to do the outer axle bearings and seals, but you'd be best to wait on buying that stuff until you get the axle shafts out and see what sort of condition they're in. If they're worn out, you'll need to either get new shafts or use repair bearings.

Well the car only has 70k on it fwiw, think the axles could be worn?

At that mileage, probably not, but it would still be wise to check before you buy parts so that you don't accidentally end up with stuff you can't use. You'll be able to tell as soon as you get the axle shafts out.

So will there just be a ridge worn in were the bearing rides or what? Sorry for the stupid question but I don't think I have ever seen a worn axle, and if I have I didn't realize it lol.

you'll see a groove worn into the axles, or pitting where the bearing rides if they're shot. Pitting makes noise, the groove makes for lots of slop and noise. You'll see it right near the end where the flange is.
