Never been impressed with any Xplod speakers. I always thought they were tinny, lacking in midrange, and had mediocre bass.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

I've always found that Xplod speakers like to explode (pop the voice coil out). Same as getting the ultra cheapo speakers and expecting the paper cone to survive some good bass tracks.

I have paper cone kenwoods in my rear deck and they survive getting cranked very well. Of course they aren't getting any low-end bass, that's what the subs are for and is why amps have frequency crossovers built in.Pete ::::>>> resident LED addict and CFI defector LED bulb replacements

paper isn't the problem, though you do usually find craptastic speakers that are made of paper. For many many years all speakers were paper and they made bass just fine. The power rating of the voice coil is what makes them pop or not. Paper doesn't hold up to a harsh environment as well as cones that are made of some sort of plastic material though, which is a big part of why they've fallen out of favor. Paper cones also tend to have foam surrounds, and the foam turns to dust after a while. That creates problems as well.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

true... I was thinking more along the lines of the crap-tastic paper speakers that Techmaster P.E.B. would blow at 50% volume on the stock radio (93 Escort door speakers - bio degradable speakers whether you trash them or not). The Escort I just bought has the front speakers so degraded that you can see the voice coil (center cap is GONE) and the surround and part of the cone are gone too. That's the crap-tastic speakers I was thinking of. The old thick paper/rubber surround speakers that my dad has are thunder-rific. Those are nice paper cones.

OEM speakers do tend to suck, no doubt. Ever pull the dash speakers on a box? They're usually dust.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

yeah... the dash speakers in my 88 were actually still in one piece (though if I had used them much I probably would have shredded them. Now I have some 4" fan grills with some PC fan filter sandwiched between them on the 4" to 5" adapters (Ford used 5" dash speakers) that I had the first set up aftermarket speakers on. Those 4" speakers are now in an old boombox and I have 6.5" speakers in the doors (after I discovered the 6.5" holes in the doors). Much better on both accounts.
side note: the dash pad is totally screwed where the speakers were (just gaping holes), hence the grill and filter sandwich.Last edited by sly; 05-02-2010, 08:33 PM.

For a middle of the road speaker I would suggest infinity, I have my stereo maxed every day and they have held up fine. Not the greatest speaker, but they are clear and cheap as hell for a tri axle component rear that doesn't distort.
