    Hello fellow enthusiasts :)

    Hello,
newb here and now proud custodian of a 1984 Mercury Grand Marquis LS 302ci. I bought her recently when I was searching Craiglist for a cheap, four seater comfortable runabout (instead of my Jeep Comanche) and there she was for $400ca and running on propane as a bonus. Can't go wrong at that price! She's in good condition with 280,000Km's and 25yrs worth knocks and scuffs in the paintwork. The head liner was fubar'd and the exhaust emmissions air pump was seized so I fixed them and other than that it's just the fan on the feet part of the heater that's not working. Not bad for it's age!
My ride to work has gone from 'rattle, bang, bounce, rattle' to a 'quiet waft' magic carpet ride. Sweet! :beach:

I hope it's OK to ask a few questions here right away? :odie:
Promise I'll move any further Q's to the appropriate forum areas

First a real simple one: What's the difference between the the little 'D' and the big 'D' on the shifter? I've discovered that the little D has an extra gear but other than that I can't tell any difference?

Another simple one I hope: What did the original wheels look like? It's got nasty generic plastic hub caps over steely's and others I've seen on the web have nice wire wheels. Could I easily/cheaply get hold of some better wheels for it?

And finally a more involved Q: Is my heater issue a common problem easily fixed if you know how? When I move the control lever to 'Floor' the fan stops. It works in all the other positions

Anyways, pleased to meet ya'll from an ex Brit who's turned Canadian eh!

looks sweet. well i can answer some questions not all.

yea...wire wheel covers would have been equipped on your car, or turbines(like many prefer) but since you already have aftermarket hubcaps installed you most likely had spokes. There are some in the for sale section. Looking like this...
but maybe with the merc. emblem in the middle

one d is for overdrive. That is the one with the extra gear, designed to help keep money in your pocket, so to say. It just helps out the engine at certain speeds.

not too sure about the heater issue...but nonetheless.

      Hi Vic,
      Speedy response!
Thanks for the info, I'll leave her in the O/D gear then and head off to investigate caps in the FS section

Use OD for speeds at or more than 55, other wise it's just gonna lug the engine.

And did I read that correctly, you have a propane powered Mercury?

OK, understood, 55+ only. I'll give that a try.
Yup, you read right Grandpa Jnr, check the diamond shaped sticker on the windshield. It's propane powered I was guessing it may have once been a company fleet vehicle. Works for me though, 60c a litre makes it viable as a daily driver. It's funny though to see people nearby sniffing the air in confusion and looking for the source of the pungent aroma

welcome to GMN... i am taking a guess you have an automatic climate control setup in your car... where the slider is for the red/blue, are there numbers? if so that sounds like your sensor in heater hose crapped out and can be bypassed by putting a jumper wire to connect the 2 wires in it...

I'll take some snaps then if you like. I didn't think it was interesting to anyone but me and my wallet.

                        The tech spec is:
A welded unit comprising 3 interconnected cylinder shaped tanks mounted transversly under the trunk holding 23 gallons (100 Litres for those in metric).

A built level gauge on the tanks that is also connected to the original on the dash.

And on the motor end of things replacing the carb it has all the techno gubbins required to turn the liquified gas back into a vaporised gas and then meter it to the engine. I think it uses an airflow device to do the metering.

Simple as that Except just DON'T run out of fuel cos you'll need a tow unless you happen to have a miniature pressure vessel to carry some spare LPG in the trunk

I'm quite happy to answer any questions about it so fire away if you want.

Thanks for the welcome 87, you posted as I was writing the last waffle. You got it, red/blue and the temp numbers. Do you have a link or pic of the offending sensor location? And does your diagnosis still make sense if the heater fan works in all the other positions just not in the 'Floor' position?
