I've been WAITING and WAITING for my 'new' box Panther (1989 Town Car) so I could introduce myself properly but couldn't keep from posting, so I thought an introduction was in order.
Howdy.
I've had 3 boxes (84 GM, 87 GM, 90 GM) and am currently squeezing the last drops of useful life from my 97 GM.
Previous to my boxes I had owned a 75 Cutlass Supreme, a 1979 Olds Custom Cruiser (Delta 88 station wagon, with a 350
), a 1976 Lincoln Mark IV (the most awesome car I ever owned, giant moon, silver/light green/dark green leather interior and all), a 1985 LeBaron convert with the 2.2 turbo, a 1986 Caprice Classic station wagon, and briefly a Dodge Omni. I'm certain to have forgotten a few. My wife currently drives an 02 PT Cruiser Limited which I maintain/repair.
Those were daily drivers. I had a fling with beater sports cars for fun, a Fiat X 1/9 (engine hummed like a 'real' sports car, stuck to the ground like glue)(but the seat didn't go far enough back), a Mazda RX7 (1st gen), a Triumph TR7 (the most fun car I ever owned), and a Toyota MR2 1st gen (very comfortable car).
I do almost all my own mechanical work but never did much by way of upgrades. Money issue really. A bodyman I ain't.
My first box was the 84, a stone cold beauty, a laid out LS, kind of a smoky white with a light grey half top and plush grey interior. I bought it with 150k on it and drove it trouble free till I sold it with around 220k on it (the body was going). The idiot I sold it to didn't maintain it, needed front pads, wrecked it on 'Dead Mans Curve' on I-90 in Cleveland, the front end was 45 degrees from the body and still running
My second was and is the best all around car I've ever owned, an 87 LS. Bought it from an 87 year old gentleman, wintered in FL, 40K miles, just beautiful condition. Dark brown over dark brown leather. Like the 84, it just ran and ran with nothing but maintenance. And what class. I miss this car.
It did have one issue - the paint liked to oxidize. Which led me to sell it with well over 200K because it was thinning after many amateur rub outs.
The folks who bought it loved it. It got t-boned hard on the passenger side about a year after I sold it. Looked like crap and the doors on that side didn't open, still ran and drove like a top.
Bought the 90 GS. It wasn't a bad car, but was pretty de-optioned and not straight (both bumpers were crooked and there was minor body damage). Being white was the closest to a cop car I've driven. When the tranny went at 70k miles I ditched it.
Desperate financially at the time, I bought a 96 Geo Metro. A 4 door with the 'big' engine (the 1.3L I4
).
You can imagine, I was very happy when I picked up my current Panther, a 97 LS whale. Blue/green with tan leather, digital dash, etc, a very nice car. Head to head against a box, well, it seems to handle better (but I don't remember if my 87 had a rear sway bar), and the drivetrain is superior. But, it doesn't have near the class imo (not even close!), the cockpit isn't anywhere near as comfortable/userfriendly, and it has not been as reliable (although at 171k I'd still drive it to CA tomorrow). Not to slam it, I like it, just imho.
Sadly it's rusting, and the interior is getting quite worn. It's going to a friends' kid.
IF I ever get my %^&@(* 89 TC!!! (I'm awaiting the freight carrier). All this talk about particularly my 87 is making it hard on me. And divorcing my 97, it's like a part of me. Stupid cars.
The TC is a dark blue/dark blue roof, dark blue leather Executive 'very clean' with 113k. I haven't seen it in person yet. When it comes in I'll have more info
Pete
PS I could blather about cars all day.
