thanks for hosting! need some help with stalling...

Hi I'm a new member from San Diego. I have spent countless hours searching for info about my cars problem and this site is definitely where i will find my answer.
I have an 89 Grand Marquis with the original very clean efi 302 that just rolled over to 100k. The car is in really good shape and i try to give it the best of everything.
Problem: the car will not stay running anymore. It turns over and fires fine right away but will die within 1-2 seconds. I can force it to keep going longer if I really work the throttle but I refuse to do that to my cold engine.
    Status:
-hot spark, even while engine is dying
-good fuel pressure at rails: 38#
    -new fuel filter anyway
    -IAC cleaned, its motor works
-tried a refurbished motorcraft alternator, no change
    -egr not stuck
-no check engine light, haven't checked codes

I dont know what to do next and its getting too cold to ride my motorcycle everywhere i go. I was told it could be a camshaft position sensor, anyone know about those? Also, my research turned up the possibility of it being an engine temp sensor. The other idea i came across was the ballast resistor in the ignition, i think. again, that one is new to me. Could it be vapor lock?
You guys are rockstars on here, if anyone can help point me in a good direction, i'd be a very grateful person.
PS- a week ago i put a new high pressure power steering hose in, but I don't see how that could have caused the problem. Thanks guys!

    Welcome.

Throttle position sensor maybe??. Located right on top of the throttle body. A couple of people posted the procedures on testing those.

Did they use ballast resistors with EEC distributors? Maybe the TFI module, but someone with more experience will need to answer this one.

These cars don't have a camshaft position sensor. Does it have enough gas in it? Maybe TPS like already stated

Sounds like a temperature sensor issue, either the coolant or air sensor. Air sensor lives on the driver's side, just behind #5 injector. Coolant is on the passenger side, in the fitting at the front corner of the manifold where the heater hose connects. Check them with a voltmeter and compare to the charts here:

gadget73, that's a really good link, thanks! My ECT reads 3.44v at 57 degrees outside. Same voltage on ACT. Can't get warm engine readings because it stalls. The TPS has a steady increase from 1v-4.45v when I rotate the throttle plate. All these readings are within spec from that link.

Is it possible for a vacuum leak to cause this?

One other thing that I'm thinking of is Mass Air. This car has a MAP sensor on the firewall but there was a plug that went to the original airbox before I put a K&N cone filter system on. Unplugging the airbox didnt cause any problems so I just let it go. Could that have been some kind of MAF sensor that those plugs had gone to?

only california boxes got mass air so perhaps

no vacuum to the map sensor, though, will make it do exactly what you're describing. it fires seemingly fine, then just dies. throttle will let it run but it stumbles like crazy

1990LTD, That's GOT to be it. I noticed toward the end of the day yesterday that the MAP sensor vacuum hose was starting to dry rot a bit. As soon as the parts stores open again, I'll get a replacement. Is that a simple generic vac hose plug-in that I can do without removing the plenum? I knew it was gonna just be a little $1.18 part...
                  Happy Thanksgiving guys!
