Teh boss had 290hp gross. Ratings from '72+ are net, which is more accuate (aka the same engine would be rated lower). There is also the Tunnel Port 302, but they were never installed in a factory produced car. The Tunnel Port basically blew up a lot because it had to rev to 7500+ to make power. Wee!
The 302 was available from late '68 to 1995 in Mustangs, except for '74 when there was no V8 and maybe 1980 or '81 when the 255 V8 temporarily was the top engine.
My bet is on the '93 Cobra for the most Ford Produced horsepower.

For one thing, 240hp is sad. It's kind of pathetic that an engine with such a reputation as a performer never made any real power numbers from the factory. HO parts are cheap. GT40 parts are moderately priced. The Cobra motor has Cobra upper intake, GT40 lower intake, and GT40 heads. The Cobra motor also comes factory with Crane 1.7 ratio aluminum roller rockers, where the Explorer come with stock stamped steel rockers. The Explorer motor has GT40 upper and lower intake, with GT40P heads (which are a little better). With the right cam and exhaust, the Explorer motor can put out 300hp without any other mods.
thats wat i thought so is a cobra intake better or a gt40 intake
now wat type of came should i get and rockers and springs should i get also looking to make 300hp or more and 300ftlbs of torque

Go with GT40 upper and lower intakes, and GT40 heads. If you're gonna rebuild the engine, get a larger camshaft. And if you haven't, redo the exhaust. After that you should get some great results.

P heads are over rated. The 40s are a better choice.
This has been discused in great detail many times. maybe with money spend on porting and other stuff GT40s are better than the P heads, but stock to stock GT40P heads are better and have better flow numbers.
If you ever want to replace your engine with a real ford replacement they have very powerful crate engines and one of them is the GT40 302 and a similar one the 347 (not the one we are getting). I have seen a build up of the mustang HO 5.0 FI STOCK that pushed the mustang into 10's with a new trans in muscle mustangs and fast fords magazine
