This thread has nothing to do with small blocks but what I want to know is what is all involved with putting a 460 in a Crown Vic?

460 in a Vic?

I think there's a guy on CVN with a white flush bumper box with a 460 in it. When I got my TV cable kit, everyone at the shop kept telling me to ditch the 351 and go 460, like it happened all the time. That was 11 years ago. There might be some old timers left there, you should give them a call. It was Total Performance in Warren, MI, IIRC.

first you'd need to fab some motor mounts up, 460s have them in a different spot than a Windsor. next you'd need to figure out what trans. After that I guess its a matter of sticking the motor and trans in the hole and seeing what else needs to change. Probable work with the exhaust to clear the steering shaft, modding/removing the wiper box if clearance is a problem there, probably a hood scoop to make it fit. You'll also likely need to figure out a fan, maybe use a pusher fan instead of a puller. Accessories would also need to be considered, maybe you can use whatever the 460 mustang guys use. I know you aren't going to be able to use 460 mustang swap engine brackets, Fox motor mounts attach to the frame in a completely different way. Its sort of uncharted territory for the most part, so I don't know if there is a specific how-to guide to make this happen. I imagine some things can be sourced from the Mustang world but not all of it.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

460 in a box. That would be cool and one incredibly heavy car.

Its too much work. My main concern would be headers, unless you were comfortable using the restrictive manifolds.
A fire breathing stroker windsor would be a better bet, IMO. The windsor is lighter, and pound for pound, performance will be better, unless you are building a 557ci stroker with gonzo parts.**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

Total Performance is a Total bust. I have talked to John (the old guy at Total, former Ford guy John Vermeersch) about the kit...which surfaced in that Car Craft magazine article from sometime in the late 1980's (I have it somewhere)....it's total bunk. They never offered it. In fact, they got so many phone calls about the non-existent kit that it's now almost impossible to get the old man on the phone. The only way I could get to talk to him was to buy a 460-into-ranger kit they used to offer back in the early 1990's (we built one at my father's shop, absolutely stupid truck to build), and then asked about the kit when the transaction was finished. He has no clue about how to get one, doesn't know what it takes to install one, and has no idea why that idiot added it to the article, because the list he gave the writer did not in any way, shape, or form, include a kit for a 460 into a panther.
Problems with a 460 install into a panther:
1. Radiator:
a. You need a huge one...
b. There isn't that much room
2. Headers: There isn't anything that fits that I can remember. The steering column is in the way....NOTE: I had the 86 SS wagon in the driveway, dabbling with the 460 install...I got 3 sets of headers to fit perfectly. Problem is? This was 1997, and I can't remember the part numbers. Otherwise, you are doomed to at least $500-$800 for a good set of custom-built headers.
3. Oil pan: You will have to notch the crossmember to get a 7 or 8 quart Fox pan to fit.
4. The wiper motor: That all has to come out to drop the motor in there, and also limits the height of valve cover you can use
5. Belt-driven accessories: I have the email address of the guy who makes a 460 CV kit. $200 the last time I looked....and all of the original equipment still works, minus the smog pump.
6. Rear-end: The stock 8.5/8.8 is going to be dead meat behind a 460, even with mods. Best bet is to build a 9" or Dana 60 to fit in there.
More later...

Be Cool makes a direct fit radiator for the CV which they rate for a 700HP engine. JBA makes a shorty 460 Mustang header which should work. No matter if you are running a 302 or a 460, the 8.8 needs aftermarket axles for serious power. It is actually cheaper to build up a 8.8 than to put a 9" in and you will have plenty of reliability and strength.

there was one guy in ohio that installed a 460 in his vic......the hood does close....i think he modded some very expensive fox 460 swap mounts......he's running manifolds.....car dynoed at 224 rwhp and that was the last i heard......i think he was dissapointed and shelved the project, cause that was the last i heard about it
you need to look into the full frame torino 460 cars and see how their moto mounts bolt to the crossmember, that may be an option.....as far as headers, in the past i would have said longtubes for a 72-76 torino, but gmgt tried 72-76 torino longtubes for a 302 and that was a bust.......the torino based cars didnt have a frames for lower control arms, also the steering box is up by the firewall
hopefully next summer tom and i will be able to give you the full details on the 460/5 speed swap
