And so the inspection is on

Well, dropped the Tudor off tonight for repairs/state inspection. On the list of stuff to do before inspection are:

    1) There has been an intermittent misfire on cylinder #8 for the past few weeks. Gonna diagnose that and attempt to eliminate it.

    2) Replace the rotted cat-back exhaust with stock pipes

    3) check and repair rear brakes as neccessary. (trying to stop the grabby brakes.

    4) New tires!!! Didnt get anything to special, just a set of decent all weathers to go till I save up for the better rims/tires next year.

    5) Most importantly, State Inspcetion. Ive been a very bad boy the last 3 months and have been driving the tudor without any badges. Now finally, I wont have to have my head on a swivel everytime I pass a cop car.

Well, wish me luck mangs. If all goes well I'll have her back Monday night in good shape for the next year. Ready to start saving for the vinyl/paint/tinting project due spring '08.

Well the verdict is in! And I bombed the NOx portion of the emissions test. Everything else on the car is ship-shape. I actually heard a tinge of regret in my mechanics voice when he told me she failed.

Any suggestions on what would cause the failure? My mechanic says that it could be the EGR being clogged or needing replaced. He's gonna go at it again tomorrow morning and let me know. He says that other than failing NOx, the car is in better running condition, by far, than he expected when I first drove it to his shop.

    Thanks for any advice mangs

NJ they have lower standards for older cars. You're not going to get them as good as the newer cars do.

See if the EGR system is working. Normally thats what takes care of the NOx stuff. If the passages in the intake are clogged shut, that will be the problem.

Believe it or not, this guy is one of the only real honest mechanics Ive ever met. He's been working on mine and my family's vehicles for 20 years. But he's also a complete straight arrow. He doesnt do "half-assed" or "get it by." I only bring vehicles to hime when I HAVE to have it done as good as original. Im sure he did everything he could to pass the tudor. Hell, like I had said, he sounded a tad sad that it ended up failing. I think he actually likes the car heh.

He had mentioned the EGR system possibly being clogged, so thats what he "should" be doing as I type. If thats all it is, I may just get out of this inspection for under 1500 bucks!!

                Thanks for the input y'all

Yet another update, and still no badges. EGR passages were indeed clogged, and he found 2 more vacuum hoses that were cracked as well. Ran it through the test again, and it failed. This time it Aced NOx, Aced CO2, failed by a groin-hair on the third gas. Im not sure which one that is, but y'all have any ideas where to look for this. Mechanic is gonna check the oxygen sensors and try a few other things to squeak out the couple percentage points I need to get by this.

What a pain in the ass, but I know its gonna be worth it when I finally get 'er back again.

                  Thanks yet again,

HC, aka hydrocarbons. Usually means a rich fuel mix or blowby. Sometimes when the cats are giving up the ghost it'll run high for HC too.

I'm not sure about here but I think we have the same standards for any car that gets tested........74-older is exempted ...

Next time you have it tested run the engine nice and hot......it seems to help....And Yes on the egr...I would take it off and try and clean it yourself...I did and that helped get Vicky to pass last time.....Oh and be sure your injectors are clean too...injectors that are dirty don't spray very good and that could cause unburned fuel.......Just a thought

how much money did you spend so far getting it to pass emmisions?
if it is over $150.00 in emmisions related repairs and it still doesent pass, you get a waiver mang......did your mechanic inform you of that?

Oh yeah, I know about the waiver, and he's tried testing this thing cold and hot. He and I both agree that if he can't get it by today, I'll take the waiver. But We're both under the opinion that if it doesnt pass, than something is off/wrong. And he is very thorough. If it were some schlub meineke tech trying to run me like this, I'ld call shennanigans and roll on. But I trust this guy.

I'll let y'all know how it goes after he calls me today.

Heh Meant no offense, we just havent had an honest Meineke, Midas, NTB, etc,.. For atleast 10 years. Round here they're all sheisters.

As for the PCV stuff, I had replaced all that before I took the car in for inspection. See I figured I'ld do as much as I could see needed done by my untrained eye, to minimize the damage of the inspection. I should hear back from him by noonish, so I'll prolly post then.
