The 8.5 and 8.8 look the same on the outside and most people working at a Ford Dealership these days has never heard of a Ford 8.5. The Panther Chassis is the only car to use them to my knowledge. 1979-1981 Panthers had a choice of 7.5 or the 8.5, 1982 was only 8.5 and 1983 started the 8.8.

Ok, I will be more detailed. I drove my company car (2005 CVPI) to Ford for maint and repairs. I was sitting at in the waiting room doing nothing and I though I would go chat with one of the Mechanics who was at the parts desk. I asked him to pull my car up in their computer to get an idea about what stuff my car had. I did not have the country squire with me. I was curious about the rear end and tranny. He pulled up the rear end in the computer and said it was and 8.8 with a 3.08 gear. 2 week later I cleand off the tag on the rear end and it matched what the guy said. 8.8 rear end with 3.08 gears on an 82 country squire.

You might have misunderstood something here. My governor is not ideal. It has nothing to do with the 3.27 at all. My trans wants to shift around 5.5k and the motor is all in at 4k. I don't plan to change the governor as I hope someday soon the car will have power up there.

Next time you are under the car, just get the numbers off of the axle tag. The tag actually says either 8.8 or 8.5 right on it, along with an ID number and the ratio.
