trust me, the thumper heads are worth the bucks, but if you can score some gt40 or gt40p heads dirt cheap, dont hesitate. 600 plus core sounds high, but think about it this way, you could get a pr of used gt40s on ebay for say 450 shipped, then spend another 200 at the machine shop getting them rebuilt.....not saying everybody wants 450 for a pr, but most people want top dollar for those heads......i would send thumper an e-mail and ask him if he will take any other heads for cores, explain that your car has e5 heads.....it cost me about 42 bucks to ship a set of e7's back to thumper

I contacted Mike Schultz @ Thumper this morning. He told me he could enlarge the bolt holes, etc for a small fee. But, he siad the heads would cost me between 780 and 880 with shipping, the 1/2" holes, etc. That still seems like alot to me. But, they offer everything I'll need.
Also, Scott: He sent me a bunch of testimonials from satisfied customers; one of them was from you (4200lb Lincoln, Birdsboro, PA).**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

And yes, any '78-and-later rockers should interchange.
So are the Thumper heads better than BHP's?2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

I did mention the Lincoln owner was the one that recommended Thumper.
What are BHP's, and how much do they cost?
Right now I am looking at a 1406 on Ebay. Its a factory rebuilt (in Edel. box, etc), and the price is very, very fair. I also see a spacer on there, but it doesn't come with the gaskets, like it should. But, there is an OEM ford spacer with the EGR valve and all.
But, I'm not sure if I can use the factory plate (to retain a functional EGR). According to what I've read you can use it. But, Mercracer, a knowledgeable source, says that the factory and Edelbrock EGR plates are different.
MrLTD, was the EGR system functional when you used the plate on a performer(EGR) manifold. Or did you just use it for show/ a spacer?**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

Gaskets are easy to come by .... have you successfully located pics of the undersides of the two EGR spacers so you can see just what's different about them? Also be interesting to get worthwhile feedback from your local smog nazis about what's actually required in order to pass, and whether then 1400 would offer real emissions advantages over the 1406 (I noticed on my 1404 and 1406 bases, a pair of plugs that might be what's not there on the 1400 ...... need to find a way to verify that .... suppose it might be possible to convert the 1406 to the 1400 by removing said plugs ....)
BHP is the outfit turbo's pal runs outside Detroit (Canton, I think), and Colin has a pair of his heads. The flow numbers he posted in one of his threads are very impressive, and the LandYacht-mang can fill you in on prices. There's also a place in Indy that has some ported E6's on clearance that torquelover told me about - not sure that'd be cost-effective, but it's interesting to think about.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

OK. I emailed the tech dept at Edel. a few weeks ago, and they answered my question about the 1400 vs. the 1406. Here is the unedited response from the tech dept.:
Because it's a emission car we are not going to have one that will be
emission compatible. If the carb is going to be use as a off road
vehicle than a 1406 600cfm, you can use a 500cfm carb but it would use
more gas than a 600cfm. The 1400 is an emission vehicle that has no
calibration, its only tuned for a GM vehicle. But the 1406 would be the
one you would use for your off road(on emission) vehicle. The
calibration is deferent and can't be changed on the 1400 so that's the
main difference. The part number for the lokars transmission bracket kit
is SRK4000.
He says all I need is the bracket to make the AOD play nice. I guess the TV cable and throttle cable fit in the braket?
The gaskets are like $25 shipped from summit.
Will a performer intake come with carb studs? Just a thought I had.Last edited by P72Ford; 01-13-2008, 08:42 PM.**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

Anyone new if a factory rebuilt Edelbrock 1406 would be rebuilt to the specs of a new one? I would assume so, but the seller doesn't know.**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

Hm, doesn't sound like a very helpful e-mail. I did notice in the installation PDF that the 1400 has a bowl vent, which the 1406 does not. Also, on other boards I've seen people talking about an "EGR vent", but I don't know what that means.
Does anyone know what they could possibly mean by saying that the 1400 "has no calibration, its only tuned for a GM vehicle"? That seems like an absurd statement, as it's beyond easy to tweak the calibration on the other 1400-series models.2012 Mazda5 Touring | Finally working on the LTD again!

I know my VV 7200 has no hook ups for EGR on it; so I really don't need the EGR vent Besides, I'd prefer to use the 1406 anyway.
Also, I'm not just retaining the EGR for visual inspection. I want to have it on the car, and I need it operational.
I have looked at the undersides of both plates. The stock plate is indeed different than the Edel. unit. But, does that necessarily mean that they aren't compatible? The stock plate only has one corner opening, whereas the Edel. has numerous channels.**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

Michael, you think the factory plate will work? These instructions here seem to say yes (first chart; manifold 3783). http://static.summitracing.com/globa...s/edl-3783.pdf
"Replaces the stock 4V EGR manifold using the stock 4V EGR adapter"
But, then it says something about making it 4bbl compatible using EDL 8053. WTF?**1976 Ford F-150 4WD: 360, 4 spd, 3.50s, factory A/C, 4" lift, Bilsteins, US Indy Mags, 35s Cruiser

I was wrong......
I double checked and the Mustang carb plate WILL work. I was looking at a truck plate and not the Mustang plate..... The Mustang plate can be used with the Edelbrock EGR intakes for 302/351W/351M-400
