what would you call a "good" shift kit?

I'd suggest picking up a book or something that covers rebuilding the AOD and have a look through it to see if you or your dad feel comfortable with doing this. It should also cover the tools you need so you can make sure you've got all the right stuff.

A properly rebuilt AOD with a properly modified valve body such as one of Lentech's offerings, or somebody else who is competent modifying it, will hold up just fine. A loose converter helps also.

If he doesn't rebuild automatic transmissions and the AOD in particular, he doesn't have the necessary transmission tools.
