I usually get 20k or so out of a set of plugs. I check the cap and rotor and replace as needed, but I'd guess about the same life. If it starts to run weird, I start checking things though.

Cool...I've never done any of the stuff (besides replacing an air filter) myself. I am looking forward to trying it all myself...it all SOUNDS straightforward but I bet I could fuck it up

hmm is replacing plugs that often really that neccessary in these old cars? Now-a-days plug replacement is as high as 100K to 120K miles

i noticed after timing chain replacement that one of the cars here needs a tune up BAD! now that the engine is tightened up, you can really feel the jerking and stuff from plugs & wires going bad

. Gotta remember, these are copper core spark plugs, not platinum or iridium tipped like newer cars have. They burn away a lot quicker. The distributor cap also cooks away, especially if its aluminum. Newer stuff has no distributor cap to wear out, and lots of them are COP, so no ignition wires either. You can get somewhat longer service life by using platinum plugs in these cars, but some people have bad results with them. I change my plugs often enough that platinum for me is a waste of money, though I never noticed them running badly in the Lincoln when I've tried them in the past.

I check my junk when I feel like it. If it looks bad, I replace it.

I do try to do biannual oil changes, though. My stuff sees way too many short trips to try to get 3000 miles per change.

I got well over 50,000 miles (5 years) on my last set of plugs, wires, cap/rotor. And they all looked and worked perfectly when I replaced them. I had Ford Racing 9mm wires, MSD cap/rotor, Motorcraft plugs. I got all the same parts except for the plugs, I now run NGKs. And through a mishap in shipping from Summit, I got a second set of everything for free, so in another 5 years, I'm all set for another tune up.

for me, i do tunes between 30 and 50K. that seems about right for most of the cars i have. 3 tunes in 9 years in my Cherokee, one in my GM and one in my caprice. the rest are whenever i get em. part of a new (used) car purchase for me.
