    n00b exhaust questions

Sorry for bringing up stupid n00b crap again.

Ok, my muffler is starting to sound kind of unhealthy. I want to do a dual exhaust upgrade but it's out of my $$ range ATM

I did, however, find a flowmaster 40 series for a steal of a price. What is there from the stock Y pipe back? Does it go straight into the muffler? I want to basically replace everything from that back with the intent of putting in an H pipe at a later date and buying a mate to the flowmaster.

Guy says 'inlet is 3" the outlets are 2 1/2"' - what else would I need to buy? I'll need a tailpipe obviously (straight or down or side, it doesn't really matter to me). I'll go with a 2 1/2 tailpipe to match obviously, but, I doubt if the stock pipe in there is 3", so how would I get that flowmaster to fit in there?

Also, guy said outlets....does that mean this is a muffler for that faux dual exhaust? I don't know if I want to go that way..

I'm don't even know where the muffler is positioned on these cars but I wouldn't be opposed to running two tips or something if it's possible.. if it wouldn't cost *that* much I might consider doing the fake single in dual out fake dual exhaust thing, but I dunno

anyway, what do you guys think?

Getting 2 1/2" over the axle is going to be tricky, even for an experienced exhaust tech. Unless you buy premade 2 1/2" pipes for a 94-96 Chevy Impala SS. You might be better off running new 2 1/4" duals from the cats back, with an X-pipe, and have it exit in front of the rear tires. It's real simple on Panthers, and the most an honest shop will charge you is $200. Mufflers are optional, you won't end up very loud with the setup. I ran it on my '88 TC, everyone loved it.

Its a single in, dual outlet muffler. I had a Flowmaster 40 SI/DO on my truck for a while, so they do exist. Its for "fake" dual exhaust systems. Its not what you want to use, really.

On the panthers, the muffler(s) are right under the rear seat area of the car. On your car, after the cats there is a y-pipe, a single muffler, and a single tailpipe, all 2" diameter (barely). You can easily add replacements duals by getting a h pipe, and two tailpipes (or only one if your current piece is decent).

You'll need the hangers for the other side, as well, as you only have them on the one side.

What you could do for the time being, is remove everything you have. Get an h pipe, and some glasspacks (which are cheap). Mock up rear hangers, and drive it until you can get tailpipes. They make specific offset glasspacks for these cars. Do not buy the straight ones if you intend to add factory style tailpipes.

It will not be much louder, but for your stock LO it will work fine.

There are other more expensive options, but since you're on a budget, I'll leave it at this for now.

You can get an h pipe from a late model car in the JY; I believe whales have stainless h pipes, as a rule. It doesn't look stainless, but it is, and it lasts for a long time. If you section the crossover, you can use that. The whales have a wider distance between the exhaust flanges by a couple inches. I have personally sectioned a whale h pipe and used it on a 5L car though, so I know it works. Its cheap, and it will last too. Plus it doesn't have those shitty inconsistent cross section bends.

You can have 2.5" pipes bent over the rear axle; I had it done. But, its more expensive, and the GM 2.5" Dynomax tails are nicer, and cheaper. But, the muffler you are thinking of is impractical, so I'd stick to what I said above.

I went to an exhaust shop and they quoted me like 550 for a catback setup...I don't want to spend that much money on an exhaust setup. I know quality costs, but, I can't justify it. They were going to give me an H pipe, turbo mufflers (I asked about glasspacks and he said I didn't want them..ok then?) and stock tails (assuming they were 2")

lemme get this straight, I don't need tail pipes? I can just run the H pipe right into a set of glasspacks? What are these offset glasspacks you speak of? What kind of tails would I need to run once I got more $ together?

oh, and I didn't know an H from an aero or whale would fit...maybe I can find one in decent shape in a JY. Is any modification needed or would it fit as a regular vic/mustang H pipe would?

d'oh, just read what you said about sectioning.

Unless you like decel pop, true dual 2.25" w/decent mufflers & cats, smooth bends, shorty headers, more than adequate under the 300 mark.

                btw, that shops a rip.

edit: btw again, glasspacks generally loose all the packing inside a month (depends on driving habits), then they rot out. The drone master will just be annoying as all hell when your going down a hill.

It's in Canadian dollars, btw. The exchange rate lately only brings that to like 525 USD though..I think it might be more cost effective if I just buy the parts I want and bring it in for someone else to do..or even try it myself...

I like the idea of having it exiting in front of the rear tires. I asked about an X pipe when I was at the shop but he just kind of ignored it. I'm going to shop around tomorrow, I have the day off.

So I'm basically just looking for an H or X pipe? What is the difference in operation?

If I could do mine all over, I'd just get a factory H-pipe, generic turbo mufflers or glasspacks, and a left and right tailpipe.

With my Vic I cut off the muffler and ran only cats until I could afford a stock H-pipe and another tailpipe with mufflers. It never happened but I didn't mind it since it wasn't too loud and had a nice rumble to it.

I think Chitownvic has stock duals with just the 4 cats, no mufflers just pipes bent to connect the H-pipe with the tailpipes, ask him how it sounds, that's what I wanted to do and should I buy another Vic that's my plan.

You'll need to get a pipe bent to fit as the stock muffler is offset/offset but yes that's what I mean. I just cut mine off and it dumped under the car which made it louder in the cabin and it droned but wasn't too bad, although I did get fumes sitting in traffic so I don't recommend dumping it, i'd connect the H-pipe and tailpipe so run it out the back so you don't get fumes and it's quieter. That should hold you over until you can save for duals, and free up some power getting rid of the muffler which is killer on 2" single exhaust.
