I think I'm gonna gut the cats and run the pipes open. Cats = heat, oil on hot cats = smoke, oil on less hot cats = less smoke. Maybe turn downs so it looks like I tried.

random, and not to thread jack, but why does the exhaust system have weights on it? Its like, hmm, how heavy can we make this thing? Well, 5 lbs more and we'll out weigh a craprice, okay lets put stupidass weights after the cats, we'll call it a vibe dampener...

It IS a dampener. They're calibrated weights to offset resonance so you don't get retarded amounts of drone in the cab. Remember, these are grandma cars.

          Now you're thinking ...

Am I correct in thinking that your Canadian junkyards suck and won't part with used exhaust parts?

BTW, if you're concerned about cost, putting an X pipe or anything Flowmaster behind your 150hp boatanchor is a big waste of money.

No idea, the only stuff I've ever tried to get from a yard has been either electrical or body/trim stuff.. used exhaust anything up here makes me think twice. I'd bet good money that whatever is in the yards is rotten, unless it got there for some reason other than being old and useless.

I am concerned about price, and I don't know anything about this stuff, that's why I'm asking I don't even know how an X pipe differs from an H pipe or what components make up an exhaust system (though someone earlier in the thread gave me a pretty good idea)

i dont know what it would add up to in canadian dollars, but come springtime, this is what I am intending on doing (with the stock lopo)
              Factory H-Pipe $70
              2 glasspacks (thrush) $65
              2 Tailpipes $60
              Necesary midpipes and extenders, $15ish

These prices are qouted from a local parts store. It wont be loud, but you should get a soft rumble, and with the straight through mufflers, it should be a slight power gain. This can be done for about 200 US dollars.

These prices are all insanely good. Where's the H pipes on Rockauto? I could not find them

i know, it took me a while to figure out that it even existed. In exhaust, its listed under "pipe". They are listed at $111, but they are cheaper at parts stores. Hope this helps!

Remember, napaonline.com is a great resource for pinning down part numbers. I (and others) can also look up Walker parts in my Walker master catalog. You can get one too just by sending them an e-mail.

An H pipe looks like an H, as it consists of two parallel pipes with a pipe running between them. An X pipe looks like an X, as the two exhaust paths merge completely and then separate again. You can build a dual exhaust without either type of crossover ... on many applications people report a power gain at low RPM from having a crossover, though some more hardcore people I've been reading posts from (guys with sub-11-second Mustangs) claim they sometimes can't measure a difference based on track times.

BTW, probably the cheapest way to add dual exhaust at home is just to buy four 45 degree bends and enough straight tubing to hook up mufflers in the stock locations, then add tailpipes. Stock-replacement '95 Caprice mufflers are 2.25" in and 2" out and would work great with that approach.
