If I were in your situation, I would go to Napa and ask for a complete, cat-back stock dual exhaust setup (minus mufflers) for a 1990 crown vic with the towing package. I would order some cheap Turbo II's or similar from Summit or Jegs. All that right there will be in the neighborhood of $300 or so. You won't miss (or notice) the extra diameter size of a custom setup. You might need a couple of lengths of straight pipe to connect up the mufflers- it will be a cut to fit deal since the new mufflers will be shorter than the stock ones.

I'd jack up the car onto jack stands, cut off the old crap with a Sawzall, snap off the bolts to the cats, cuss a lot, torch off the rusty studs, install new studs, piece everything together, use all new hangers and mig-weld up as much as I could get to.

Then I would sit back and wonder why I didn't pay someone to do it, and explain to myself I saved a couple hundred bucks for wasting a weekend on my back on a cold garage floor.

I do like the other suggestion too about using the PI stuff from a junkyard.

We don't have NAPA here. It's a specialty exhaust shop, Canadian Tire (would probably be in the neighborhood of 700 bucks there..oddly enough the glasspacks are about 20 bucks cheaper there than the shop. If I do this, I'm buying mufflers elsewhere and bringing them to him), or I buy it all and do it in my backyard. I don't have the skill, knowledge, or means (tools etc) to do it myself. I wish I could buy all of the stuff online, it's way cheaper, but shipping up here costs as much as the muffler does.

There aren't any Interceptors in junkyards around here unless they were taxis for a few years after retirement. Cop cars have been all Impalas for as long as they've been making them. Stuff under a car doesn't stay rust-free too long, either, so I don't think I could find anything in decent shape.anyway.

I was quoted about 560 + tax at another shop for a setup from the cats back w/ boss turbo mufflers and an h pipe.

No crossover will cost some torque. I'd also price standard off the shelf dual exhaust parts. Its just an H pipe, you leave the front pipes intact. The Y unbolts, and the H bolts up. Done.

Just did actually..H pipe from rockauto is 150 shipped. I'd have to get mufflers and tails and whatnot, which leads me to my next question.. Can all of this stuff be clamped/bolted together? If so I have somewhat of a chance of being able to put it together myself.

only set of duals like it lol...

rust proof pipes are galvanized street sign poles (free) bent with a bottle jack style pipe bender i bought/used/returned and packing the pipes with sand to prevent collapsing, 3" flowmaster super 44's, 3" turndowns, all clamped together and universal hangers. took an afternoon, cost me a grand total of $230 Canadian and sounds deep, smooth, and thumps like a bigger motor. no problems with it but i've got an off-road 2.5" BBK H-pipe, highflow cats, and headers to put on with some HO parts and other stuff in 2 weeks to pick up some power since sound is pretty much all i got with just the cat back deal. maybe got my 5hp, i noticed it but not allot extra.

good luck with it, i have been wanting to see how cherry bombs sound on my car, and you will be allot happier with anything other than that pretzel of a tail pipe leading to one tip out the back. it looks pretty cool with all the exhaust steam shooting out 2 turndowns straight to the ground here in winter time.

Maybe it's because I feel like the shop that did my exhaust ripped me off, but if I could do it all over (with a stock lopo), factory h-pipe, generic performance mufflers, left and right side tail pipes, couple of universal hangers and some clamps... Probably could have saved $200.

Yes, it can be...but it will be more difficult. You can do it yourself.

And let me apologize for my somewhat rambling earlier post. Not knowing your ability, I simply posted what I would do.

oh, hey, don't apologize for anything.

I talked to another small shop and fake duals (single inlet dual outlet muffler with two tailpipes) would be about the cost of an H pipe by itself if I ordered it on the interweb from RockAuto or something. It's not going to breathe more than marginally better (I figure because of the muffler being better flowing than stock) but It'll sound better and look decent. I think I am fine with this.

I personally wouldn't go with "fake" duals. If your going the shop route just find the cheapest one that will install factory duals.

Almost 600 for stock duals w/ turbo mufflers (60 bucks a piece..these are the cheap ones). 509 is for straight pipes coming off of the manifolds with glasspacks (just the cherry bombs)..these are just a few of the quotes, the rest are about the same. I haven't been to every place in town yet but the 509 is the cheapest quote I've gotten. I'm probably just going to leave the thing alone, I don't want to spend that kind of money.

You think that's bad, I talked to a dealership that wanted $1200US to install dual exhaust on my wagon using Ford parts - and that was in 1999. They did offer an alternative, and that was $600US (in 1999) to use parts from NAPA that wouldn't be quiet like the stock stuff.

But yeah, probably not a bad idea to leave it alone until you're comfortable doing it at home. Like we were discussing in What Are You Working On, it's really a pretty simple job, especially if using factory parts, and there's no real point in paying shop labor rates for it.

I took stock Mustang headers, stock Mustang H-pipe, gutted the cats, S-10 midpipes, and $20 Summit mufflers with turndowns angled outward. I think it ended up costing me about $150 in the end. I clamped it all together in a couple hours and loved the almost non-existent idle, but undeniable WOT that still didn't sound like ass.

For real. It's amazing how cheaply you can do things that shops want a small fortune to do for you (and sometimes do wrong).

I would love to do it myself and save a shit ton of money but yeah, I don't have the ability yet. Does anyone have a diagram of the exhaust on these cars? like this one

                            but, y'know, not a mustang.

Can anyone confirm or deny the interchangeability of 92-97 H pipes with ours? I was reading that in a few threads yesterday but I can't find them again.
