Sounds like a leaking fuel-line, which is located under the car. On the driver's side...IIRC.

you could also have a rusted out filler neck (like I had to deal with on my Mark VI). little hole in that just inside the fender grommet and you'll have no end of fuel vapor smell. Opening a window will increase the smell and it will be strongest in the trunk.
that little patch that's circled is where the pinhole was on my filler neck. don't go ripping up the grommet like I accidentally did. There's 4 screws that hold that thing in place. Just take those out and carefully flex the grommet back a little to check that. and yes... getting to those screws is a pain in the ass.

Hey guys;
I'm new here but I recently had to replace the gas tank in my 89 GM. It turned out to be a huge all night pain in the $&*.
The car has a large grommet around the filler neck where it goes into the tank. It has gotten hard and crusty over time, and no longer makes a seal. I don't know for sure but you may have a similar prob. There is also a hole in the top of the tank for the breather tube that has another grommet that can leak. Good luck finding replacements for those parts.

dealers can still get the filler pipe grommets. the breather grommets are probably also available as well, but if not, can be sourced at any hardware store that carries grommets since it's not that big.
