What Is This I Don't Even?

So I started the car and drove about 30 feet. At 20KPH the engine refused to accelerate, spluttered, died.

I tried again. And it did it again. And again. And again.

"Well #$%^&" I exclaimed. The transmission must have died, because it was about the speed when it's supposed to shift from 1st to 2nd.

So I limped the damn thing home, then I looked under the hood. I examined the air filter and it was like a ring of blackness.

So I went to Canadian Tire and going a K&N air filter for $62. I threw it in and now the car runs fantabulous.

This was highly odd to me, because I figured it was the tranny or fuel pump.

Breathing is pretty important! You don't realize how badly a dirty air filter can affect a cars performance until something like this happens.

Lesson learned. I was scared the transmission took a dump, or that it was the fuel pump.

I'm thinking I should just replace everything under the hood except for the motor itself.

That sounds suspiciously like the formula for an explosion.

Buy a new breather too. A soaked breather will cause a dirty air filter quickly

on a carb setup though right? I don't see how anything can make it to the air filter on an sefi motor unless it's plumbed much differently than mine.

Yeah, in carbed cars the oil from the crankcase ends up in the air cleaner if the breathes element doesn't filter it out. Probably cfi too

depends on the year of car and what induction system is in it

                            It's carbeurated. 5.8L 351 cubic inches.

I can include this mysterious breather device on my shoppin list to NAPA tomorrow.

It's the plastic and foam or cotton piece under the air cleaner lid, passenger side. It will have a hose from the passenger valve cover to it through the air cleaner base. Comes loose by pulling off a clip on the outside of the air cleaner base. It's a 3 dollar or so item.
