Ok so I replaced the TFI module last night and am hoping it solves my problem. If not the pip is next on my list and im finding its cheaper to buy a reman dizzy than it is have the pip replaced. Everywhere i have looked so far lists the dizzy with either a steel or cast iron gear. I know i have to get the right one to avoid chaos but am wondering how to tell what mine is, is it stamped on the gear? Or is there another way to tell, cant use a magnet since it will stick to both.

the steel gear looks machined... the iron gear looks cast (not as smooth). Yours should have the steel gear as I think all roller engines have steel gears.

Isn't it steel vs brass? I'm having brain flatulence....The determining factor is wether you have the roller cam or not.

steel gear with an 86+ roller cam
iron gear with 85- flat tappet cam
if its not a stock cam, you ought to know what you have.
and yes, you look for sand casting marks on the iron or lathe facing marks on the steel gear. You'd see it most clearly on the flat top or bottom surfaces.
There are bronze gears but they weren't factory installed. I think those are for aftermarket solid roller cams or something.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
