Wow, didn't know it would give you rod knock..

My Lincoln is an 89 with 130k on it, I use 10 w 40, but some peeple here say to use 5 w 30. I am a little weary of doing that though

I ran Seafoam in the oil on my truck, after I dumped that out and put in fresh oil the truck developed either piston slap or rod knock. The truck is still going strong, but I won't use that shit again.

          THIS!

This is why you have to be ready to replace freeze plugs when you do a coolant flush. It may remove crud that's sealed up holes in the plugs.

Shock treatment of old crusty systems usually does not end well. About the safest way to clean a motor is just do normal oil changes. If its really nasty inside, do 1500 mile changes, or whenever it gets good and dark. It will clean itself out slowly if you do it that way rather than breaking things loose that might clog up the oil passages. If the engine has always had regular oil changes using any oil that isn't completely horrible, chances are good that its fine inside.

+1 Buy the best oil filter you can afford and change it every time. I have used the Marvel mystery oil in the gas, it seemed to keep the fuel system clean.
I remember about 45 years ago, I had a 62 Mercury. The motor was so shot that I ran 50 w plus STP. Kept it one step away from the junkyard.
That was in Ca, where it is warm.

Interesting. Well, the motor just has that morning or cold start noise that would go away in like 2 minutes.... that and I would go through a quart of oil every 1400-1600 miles.. I was using valvoline 10w 40 with a quart of lucas. I am just going to go back to Catrol GTW High mileage 10-w-40 all 5 qts. Mark off full on that screwed up dipstick and go from there

this is my 88... but it uses (leaks) 2 quarts every 1500. 10w30 high mileage though for mine.

yeah... leaks enough to rust proof the front half of the car (though it's not needed since I live in the south, but still)

HAHA well glad to hear the group consensus. I was in Autozone buying oil castrol and bosch filter and realized that this Castrol GTX high mileage oil is part synthetic. So i immediately put it back and bought regular Castrol GTX. I know a lot of people talk highly of synthetic, but I think it is waay too late for my car to convert 130k miles. Not to mentioned have the synthetic oil wash away crucial crud deposits!!
