Cable broke probably. If the cable was stuck out and still connected, it would hold 1st forever and never shift.

Eureka! A few light taps with the hammer, WD-40, then some lithium grease loosened the lever and it seems that I'm back in business! Thanks for all your help folks!

Pull the cable off that lever and clean the ball stud up too. Its probably rusty in there and binding somewhat. THats the other end of the TV cable where it controls transmission pressure. If that doesn't track properly, it will do dumb stuff.

Did you park the 89 this past winter and drive the Town Car? If you did that might explain how this stuff seized up on you. If you drove the 89 daily throughout the winter it seems kind of strange that it would seize like this.

I drove it throughout the winter, but it has been occasionally seizing up on me for the past 18 months. A cycle through the gears would snap it back in place, and I was not even sure what that was doing. All good in the end.

The TV lever and the shift lever are next to each other with a concentric shaft. They were likely sticking together and the shift lever movement was just jarring it loose.

Yep, sure thing that is exactly what happened... It seems to be running without an issue now and, shifting without a problem. Transmission still seems okay! Bought the brass grommet, should be here by Tuesday, will tackle it then. Once again, thank you all so much folks, this is probably the greatest and the most welcoming forum out there!

You're lucky. On my car the TV cable snapped on the transmission side. They're a PITA to find a replacement.

I ended up using on from a mustang. It's longer than ours so I had to feed it in a way it didn't bind on stuff.

For a used replacement cable he would have been set since there are at least half a dozen in the local yards around here.
