so i want to punch out the stuf in my cats (89 CV) do i have to take them off the car? or can i get the stuf out when i take of the y-pipe? thanks

Assuming 4-cat system the main (bottom) cats you can probably do while on the car, to get the top ones though you have to take the downpipes off.

Before you do anything, what are the emission laws in your state?

I've got that done with my '88 Ford.

If your state requires emissions testing with a breathalyser- type device, then don't do it. It will never pass. If it's just a visual inspection, then go ahead. Don't worry as long as the mechanic doesn't have x-ray vision, you got nothing to worry about.

Taking downpipes off ain't such a big deal, you got two nuts on each side - use some thread release chemical stuff, spray it on the studs several times before you go do the job, then run the engine till the manifolds warm up, get your ratchet, the 10" extension I mentioned you, a deep socket (11/16" IIRC), and a breaker bar (just in case), and get them bitches off - should take you less than half an hour including jacking up the car and putting her on stands.

Sounds kind of like it is here...

No emissions testing, no visual or equipment testing, no inspections for anything.

You just send in proof of insurance along with your payment each year and they send out your annual 'sticker' for the tag. (Only one tag, none for the front)...

Anything goes here when it comes to vehicle modifications.

If it's an '89, you'll have 4 cats. Every box I've owned from '86 up has been a 4 cat system.

Mine were 3/4...but I am not entirely sure they are the original bolts.
