    Transmission is starting to go... :(

    Sorry to be silent for so long, I just developed a tendancy to be a lurker.

    Well, I'm pretty sure my transmission is starting to go bad...The shift from 1-2 has become very rough, and the shift from 2-3 takes longer than usual. Overdrive seems to work, but if you are cruising along, and give it gas, it will no longer kick down a gear or two. It will just stay in third or OD.

    First chance I get, I'll get the fluid changed in hopes that it will help, but otherwise, it might be a more costly repair...any ideas?

    Check the TV Cable/Grommet.

      +1 check the grommet and make sure it isnt rotted.

      If the fluid and filter hasnt changed in a good long while, do change it, it would only benifit the trans, sometimes bad fluid will cause the trans to act funny. Make sure you drain the converter too.

      You could also try an additive when you change the fluid but I dont know how much it will help. A shift kit could help but I dont know if it would be a good idea to put one in a bad trans, maybe it could make it last a while longer.

        +2 Check the TV cable grommet As Soon As Possible!!! Don't find out the hard way like I did.

        I burnt 3rd gear and can't drive over 50 mph!!!

            Amen. Check that thing ASAP - wish I had. (Just got the bill today, $1375 to rebuild tranny + $100 to fabricate new crossmember + tax and stuff = $1600). In other words, CHECK THAT GROMMET.
            89 Grand Marquis LS with 107K miles (as of 1/13/07). As proof of my undying love, I've invested:
            - New exhaust
            - Front brakes
            - Rebuilt tranny
            - New vinyl top
            - Alternator & Battery
            - And still going.

                Near the throttle cable on the Throttle Body.

                  I found this in the hole on my throttle body arm.



                  The TV cable hanging an inch below the arm.

                    Dude, get a crossmember from a junkyard for $30 and bolt it in.

                          Replace the grommet and adjust or have adjusted the tv cable IMMEDIATELY! I would not drive this car again till I did so. I would also assume that the tv cable now needs adjusting to be on the safe side. Failure to do so WILL fry your transmission. This is unfortunately based on personal experience. I sincerely hope that you caught this in time, but to tell you the truth from the sounds of it you need a tranny rebuild. Sorry.

                            damm u guys need to come tomy part of pa for transmissions........that much could have gotten u a performance wide ratio aod with a supercoupe convertor

                            1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

                              Plus, again, I know several people who use the very same transmissions, and they kick ass.
