It's just one bolt indeed, use a shallow 1/2" socket with a flex-joint and an extesion for it. As for setting timing by ear, here's what I found on CVN:

    Classic Timing Mod

Dark, I just saw your user title - I was about to get an "I love G.R.I.T.S." licenense plate, but was warned that the confederation flag on the background will get me troubles pretty much anywhere except for Howell. Then last fall I saw some automotive company's CEO who came to TRW for some meeting, she was a pornstar-looking hottie that rolled in with a '70s truck in bright red, with lots of crome, huge mudding tires and two Confederation flags waving behind the cab - me and my co-workers were like Daaaaamn!!!

By the way, did you look for a new alternator already?

Dont be stupid ... Sears and most other places sell basic timing lights for around $25-$30. If you want your car to run properly, buy the proper tools and use them properly.

Theres no way to tell when the timing is gonna be right without a light. You gotta have a timing light.

I imagine you want to set the timing to 10* yes? There is no way in hell you are gonna get there by ear. You could overshoot or be under.

Cowmans "procedure" is hit or miss. Do you really feel like turning the disty, driving around, stopping, turning it again, driving, stopping, turning it again, driving, stopping? A timing light is a damn good investment, you can rent them at Advance or other parts houses for cheap.

I set my 87's by ear and by 14 mile times took a long time to get it perfect.....Then checked it with a timing light. Base timing was around 20*...

Dwell Tach? Those are used for setting points, you dont need that for your car. But the timing light is just what you need.
