My Town Car 5.0 Engine Build Thread

well i am planning to upgrade the motor in my towny to my requirements just want to see if someone can tell me how to achieve what i want whle still getting decent MPG.

dont need to much horsepower but torque i would love i want to make this 5.0 pump out 250HP and 350 Pounds of torque i think that can be doable.

my plans so far please fill me in with other stuff to do i think i got a start here as i access to a 5.8L Lightning my boss at the junkyard is parting out.

Camshaft- 93 Thunderbird Cam(Heard it's the same as the cobra cam) or a Crane 2031 which is very similar put much powerful than the cobra cam but very close to specs.

    Heads- GT40 ported

Intakes- GT40 Intakes with GT40 Upper Tubular Intake from The Lightning. Should clear the townys hood.

    Injectors - 19lbs or 24lbs ???

    ECM- ??????

Rocker Arms- 1.7 dont know what type.

thats all i have for now please fill me in with other stuff needed.

Uhm, seriously? You have access to a lightning motor and you are going to just build a 5.0? Put the lightning motor in.

i dont have access to the whole engine most of that is gone already along with body parts to that lightning. the intakes are the only pieces left so it's staying a 5.0. i dont want a 5.8 i my hood i want to build the 5.0. 5.8 maybe after the 5.0 blows. for now i want to build the 5.0.

5.8 lower will not fit 5.0.The Lightening upper should fit an Explorer lower though. If you want to build torque, don't go too big w\the exhaust.

Stock Exploder engine, 1.7s, header back exhaust, and the usual MKVII/Mustang engine management ought to do the trick. Keep the stock Exploder cam for maximum TC moving torque.

Honestly a f4te truck cam has more lift with 1.7rocker arms than a ho or explore camThe lightning intake is ok and cool looking but the exploded one was designed for tourqe. If you choose to go aftermarket cam a crane 2020,comp xe258, or a custom grind from Randy Malik of Rm competition would be the way to go.For ecu I suggest either the stang ecu (for tuneability purposes) or mark ii ecm ,If your running anything other than 19 lb injectors you will require a tune to run anything higherJust a word of advice if your going to dabble in the high performance arena make sure you do your research beforehand and just be because something will work in a mustang will not react the same way in a panther.

As someone mentioned earlier, the exp intake is for low end & torque. The gt-40 (lightening) is designed for higher rpm air flow. Therefore the exp may not look as "cool" but it is more appropriate for your goal....

                      research research research.

figure out what you want the motor to do and figure out what you need to make it do that. unless you're staring at a pile of parts and you want to use them up, don't just put stuff together and hope for the best.

what do you want this motor to do?

                      how will it be driven?

I've actually read a bunch of threads on Corral regarding the various GT40 upper intakes, and it was concluded that theres such a tiny amount of actual real-world difference between them that they're basically equal. The lower intake is the airflow restriction, so the upper matters very little in practical terms. They all have very similar total airflow numbers anyway. The Lightning and Cobra piece are much more expensive, but look cooler. I suspect those two things are more related than anything else.

The Lightning intakes would be the most expensive part required to stick a 351 in a towncar. If you have them, the rest is pretty easy. 351's do fit under an un-modified Lincoln hood. hell, Justin's hood closed on the 408w motor and I'd bet that was every bit as tall as a 351 with Lightning intakes on it. If you're doing a 302, stick a stock Explorer motor in and call it a day. it'll give you the numbers you seek.

i dont plan on doing a whole explorer motor swap. just intakes, heads, cams, and exhaust on the engine already in the town car to make it a HO. what else will need to achieve those results if i do it the way i am doing it without going with a whole explorer motor.

i do plan to sway the pistons to whats better hyperutectic or forged. i think the stock pistons in my towny wont work with the gt40 heads.

what are you gonna use that on lol. yeah the lighning isnt at my bosses yard but he was able to pull parts off it becuase it's his friends vehicle he's scrapping due to rust. he offered me $400 for both intakes lower and upper that sounds like a good deal. wish i could see this lightning never saw one.
