Yes the tubular gt40 is cool to look at but 400 bucks is what they go for so good deal not so muchI can bet on why John wants the lower lol .Matt you say your doing a basic ho build but it looks like you want to really build something. And honestly unless your spraying the motor or something hypers are fine but if you are looking to boost, juice, or blow the motor then forged ,which are stronger than hypers. Also stupid question? Why wouldn't gt40 head fit on a stock motor?(other than a 86 or older motor) Gt40p heads and a xe258 fit so why not ? Seriously read up more or ask questions better yet call me if you have questions.
89 townie, mild exhuast up grades, soon to have loud ass stereo....

i know they fit it just the gt40 has valve reliefs in the pistons on exploders i dont think stock panther pistons have those reliefs. will the lower gt40 lightning intake fit a 5.0.

If the parts are available, why not use them? Would they be that mismatched? A Lightning upper would look cool, and it would be available if you should decide that the 5.0L isn't enough.

I agree. Use the lightning upper unless there's a real tuning/combo issue. If you wanna go 351efi you've got it, and someone might blow you away with an offer on it later.

It might be easier to slam a whole Exploder engine in there rather than tearing apart what you have to swap the entire upper end. Get some 1990 Lincoln logs and it'll bolt up to your existing crappy exhaust.

The lightning lower won't fit a 302 Matt you will need either a cobra or exp lower

If you're considering swapping pistons, don't bother. Just replace the engine. If you tear it down to the point that you've got the pistons out, the only thing left is the actual block. Its far far more work to do an HO swap and replace pistons than it is to pop and swap the motor. Honestly, having done a set of heads in the car once, I'll never do it again. It took me less time to swap the engine last time than it did to tear the engine down to the shortblock and put it back together. You'd also have the time spent swapping the cam. F that.

Find a low mileage Explorer motor! Low mileage= less chance of abuse/wear!! Check it all out. Re gasket the motor, swap oil pan and such, upgrade the valve springs. You can put in whatever cam you'd like. Clean the engine and paint it while it's out. Drive your car until this is ready. Kinda the same idea you wanted to go with your Grand Marquis.

Pull heads, intake, timing cover, cam... The valves should clear the pistons. People have done HO/Explorer swap on lopo bottom end.
