    Ball joint broke

Alright… my ball joint popped out on me today, i guess I do own a shitbox. It fell out in a parking lot on my way home. I kept hearing a rattling and thought it was my exhaust Thats held on by a clothes hanger shaking around, which it does. Obviously im about to replace both ball joints and it looks like my backing plate for my rotor is bent, don’t know if the rotor itself is. Anything else I should replace that might’ve been affected? It landed on the control arm so I guess I’d replace both of those too.

Trying to send some pics but the site is struggling. I’ll send more later but the only damage I noticed was the ball joint itself. I also wasn’t moving when it popped off. Which brand do I order/ go get? And what all do I need for this job?

Just replace the ball joint. The splash shield looks to be plastic. You could just zip-tie that crack or if you have access to one of those plastic repair hot wire tools, you could use that. I used box staples to fix my bumper, so those would probably work as well (use like the zip-tie trick). Unless the rotor was damaged by the control arm, you probably don't need to touch the brakes.

As for which brand... Anything in the "daily driver" section on Rock Auto is a decent brand. You're not going to get much different between them all. They are a better quality tier compared to the economy parts.

Edit: Broke out the posts into their own thread because it's a different topic.

Got it. I thought that usually when something like this fails there would be collateral. I’ll just get both sides then.

Your sway bar endlinks don't look so awesome, throw a set of those in the cart while you're at it. Just be careful when you do this, there is a heck of a lot of pressure on that spring.

If one blew apart, expect the other to be just about as bad.

Yeah I was gonna get those too while I was at it. I was about to go with moog but I didn’t know they went to shit so I got Delphi ball joints. The ball joint will be in before the endlinks so I’ll probably be driving for a few days on the old ones.

Edit: how is mevotech as of now? I’ve heard good and bad things from them recently.

Mevotech seems to be about on par with Moog currently. You might get good stuff... you might have to warranty it.

Mevotech is apparently Canadian. I always thought they were China because everything is.

The company may be Canadian but I believe the parts are actually made ibn China. How good is the quality of their parts? No personal experience so it is a crap shoot like most other aftermarket parts (and now even most if not all OEM).

Given how garbage everything has become I don't know that they are likely to be worse than any other garbage, just possibly costing less for the insult. I might own a set of Fox inner tie rod ends that they made but I think they are in the box of clearance items, not actually installed on anything.

Couldn't agree more! Chinesium parts are, as previously stated, a real crap shoot!!

Alright, I tried to hit it with a sledge and no budge from the knuckle. Would it be a good idea to jack up the control arm until it meets with the ball joint and use a press to get it out? If I got to go and get a pickle fork then I will tomorrow

Might use a bushing/ball joint remover to press the bold out (put the catch cup on the threaded side of the C-clamp and use the static end of the clamp to press on the bolt). Get a lot of tension on it and if it doesn't come loose, whack the knuckle with a large hammer to get some vibration into the thing and it should pop out. Make sure to hit only the knuckle and not the press.
