Wheel and tire size and offset suggestions?

Having a hard time finding much searching for this...
I currently have 225/60r14 on the 1983 MGM which are quite cracked and I'm afraid I wont pass inspection this weekend. The speedometer is also 10 mph fast at freeway speed. (65 measure via GPS = 75 on speedometer). The majority of my driving is at 69 mph (4 over the speed limit) so I definitely want a larger tire.

Any suggestions on sizes, easy to find wheels, and budget friendly, etc?

It looks like 255/60r16 or something around 28" diameter would correct the speedo

There's a set of 97 ish era mustang wheels, 17x8 +30 nearby. Would those work?

Generally speaking you want wheels with a low offset, lets say ET somewhere between -10 & 10. Wider the wheel, the more important offset is.
Those Mustang wheels would be quite sunken in and might not even clear when turning. Wheels and tires off a 90's Explorer might work in a pinch.

According to brochures, the stock tires size 225/75R14 or 205/75R15.
I use 215/70R15 as that is a more common size here, and a 225/70R15 fills out the wheelwell a little nicer, but looks a bit tall.

You'd need spacers with the Mustang wheels. At least 1" all around. I think a 1" front and 1.5" in the rear make it look the best. Some wheels run into issues with the center cap not clearing the giant front hub.

Oh yeah that too, the panther center bore is 70.3mm which is pretty large.

Ever consider just putting the OEM size on and then see if the speedometer works correctly?

Going from a 225/60R14 to a 225/70R15 is a 11.3% increase, which would get you pretty close.

FWIW, the speedo in my '85 shows about 6% slower than GPS with 225/70R15 in the rear. Even with the factory size it would show slower than actual.

Now if only I could find a set of 15s!

225/75r15 should be pretty spot on Speedo wise, I think that's what I'll aim for unless another option presents itself

Maybe I should have started with this but what are the widest/tallest tires that fit with stock height suspension/ no modification?

9.5 wide front and 10.5 in the rear. But you will have to roll the fender lip a little. This is with stock height tiers (26.6 to 27 inch).

A good no scrub rotatable tire size is to run 9 wide all around if you want fat meat you can get full mileage out of.

Stock is 6. Stock performance is 6.5. Early stock is 5.5.

I think the steelies I have in storage are 2 6 inch wide and 2 6.5 inch wide. All 15 inch. These will probably just be used to haul my car to scrap whenever I finally let it die (after parting it out), which will probably not happen anytime soon.

I'd probably be looking for later Panther stuff in 16" but thats me. 98-02 are all 16" and the correct offset. Not a fan of huge wheels and I don't want anything wide enough to rub or cost more than the small fortune tires cost anyway.

also I'm very much averse to anything that says "look at me" and stock wheels don't attract attention.

Well there's some 15 and 16 inch American racing around as well as a set of 01 crown Vic 17x7 et12 wheels so I'll see what I can get

The crown vic wheels would be hub centric without rings and 17" probably has a better tire selection nowadays vs. 15".
