I installed a brand new Ford core in 2006, it was bad when I installed it. I replaced it about a month ago with another OEM. I would suggest pressure checking the core before installing. Use an air regulator and some collection of hoses to connect them up. Cap off one side of the core, and put 15 psi of air to it. Dunk the core in a bucket of water and look for a stream of bubbles. My old core had a small stream coming out. New core was perfect, no stinky car either. Don't put more than 15 psi to the core, it may explode if you do, at a minimum its very likely to cause leaks.

The one I bought isn't Ford or Motorcraft, I don't think. It was only about 50 or 60 on RockAuto....should I get rid of this one and put a MC one in?
What kind is it? If its a Visteon, its OEM.

. I just need a good core to put in along with my restrictor
Why would you want to use a restrictor? It can limit heat output.

those aren't really set up in such a way that allows easy connection to a rubber hose, but if you can work out a way to do it, that will work. Bike pump, rad pressure tester, whatever you have to put a few psi of air. I had a few extra unused regulators laying around at work, so I brought one home for my own purposes.

I will certainly pressure test it and dunk it into water.

Really? Never seen a restrictor in a Chevy and never ballooned one of those.

might be a Ford thing. I've swelled one up, mrlrd puffed one up so bad it wouldn't come out of the plenum box. Mustangs come stock with the restrictor because they were expected to see high rpm. The granny cars with the huge accessory pullies were never expected to wind up enough to be a problem. They were designed to give super AC and proper engine cooling while loafing along at 1800 rpm, not survive 5000 rpm blasts.
