I don't see any check engine. I see a place that could be used as such. The middle row, left or right.

I see a check OIL light that should only light up if the oil level is low about 1-2 quarts.

If you have a multimeter and pull the pod, you should be able to trace the wire from the diag port to the line that goes to the lamp you think is a check engine light. If it is wired up at all. From what I see, it shouldn't be wired. Pull the pod and compare the traces to that light to the connections on the harness and you'll find out real quick if it's actually wired for use or not.

either way, if it does in fact have a check engine light, I expect that its not hooked up internally.

When I did pull the pod it was wired up with bulbs and all. The one on the left is the Alarm light and the right is the check engine light. I took the bulbs out and held the pod up to the light to see them. Where the bulbs twist in is that plastic paper with copper traces which weren't dead ends. I didn't think to use my multimeter though. I also do not want to pull that dash apart again... Just going to assume it will not light up.

        Thanks fellas.

          lots of good suggestions.
just to point out, it *could* also be the printed circuit board on the backside of the instrument cluster itself. Did the copper contacts look worn through?

The Check Engine Light on my 89 doesn't come on when the ignition is in RUN. The light does work though, I don't think it is supposed to come on every time you start the car.

              BerniniCaCO3,
Copper contacts looked new. I took out other bulbs and swapped them around and then had to take them out again when they didn't work, had to find a sweet spot..

              L1011tristar17,
Hmm. GF has an 89 like yours and hers does come on in the run position. Is there something I can do or safely unplug to force the light to come on? Maybe the thing does work lol.

That's what everyone says yet it's wired up and there! Sigh, you guys are right, you know these things better than I. I just like lights, gauges and such! Someone could add volt n oil prssure to threft pod on the instrument cluster and then put a tach where the clock is....

gotta have a clock. A tick-tock-tach would be an acceptable compromise.
