My garage probably looks like chaos to anyone who sets eyes on it, yet I know where 95% of the stuff I need is. Unless it gets moved by someone other than me...

No, no, no. Your garage looks just fine. I will have to get you a picture of my garage at the moment. It's literal chaos in there and I currently can't park cars in there without spending a few minutes moving crap. If I get around to redoing more of the electrical and then doing insulation, it's only going to get worse before it gets better.

As arrange/rearrange, for our own benefit, I would assume that is true in most cases. If we are not doing so for "This Old Garage", who cares? As long as we can find our stuff that is all that matters. If we can arrange for aesthetics as well as functionality, all the better!

Dad spent 3 evenings cleaning up and organizing the garage after being a mess for the last ~9 months. There's even a temporary empty spot on the floor, about the size of a '65 Grand Prix.
So well organized I can't find a damn thing! TBH he needs to look for things too now...

LoL alright then, I'll take your word for it. I think that's the way to go, and the main reason I haven't modified anything- there's already crap living in there. When I initially moved in, I was in a hurry to get all the junk in. At least there are shelves now, almost forgot I practically had "junk" piled up in areas to waist level.

Indeed. Maybe one day. Although I have been saying that for years. Got close last year when we assembled the other shelves for the other side. Two cars are in the two car garage without stuff stacked on 'em, so that's all that matters, eh?

LoL That would be my problem if I did organize. My brain is already trained to know where to go. "If it's not in this spot, it's in the other.." My wife gets irritated as she sees it as "shit everywhere with no labels."
Me: "No. This is Ford shelf #1, next to GM shelf #1 flanked by Ford shelf #2, see?"
Wife: "Oh really? I didn't know Ford made sand paper or orbital sanders. "
            Me: "That's the miscellaneous shelf!"
Wife: "..Then what's the tool box for?"
            Me: "Tools!"
            Wife: ""

I have a HomeDepot 27 gallon tote labeled "car parts" It has all the small items in it. Then there are larger items sitting around it. This is the recent organizing done. I still have a long way to go to get all my stuff organized. Moving showed me just how much crap I have. And yeah, I've gone into my parts stash and found that one solitary thing I've held onto for over a decade that fixed something on more than one occasion. I fear the day my kid has to sort my stash (or just scrap it).

Oh god, I hope we never have to move. Might just let it all go with the house. The only things I truly care about saving would be the stereo systems, video games & related crap and the cars. "We will rebuild it bigger and stronger.."

This conversation did make me think if I were to kick the bucket unexpectedly, there would most likely be a lot of disgust for all the stuff left behind. Stuff that would probably end up in the trash despite it's value. As my wife would say, "I ain't got time for that shit!"

yeah the prospect of moving all my crap gives me nightmares. I am sort of curious how many things that have been MIA for a long time now will re-appear though.

The biggest problem with moving is now you've touched it all, but you piled it all here and there and now know where NOTHING is. Been 9 months now and I almost know where all of my crap is.

That did happen when I moved to the current house. "Oh, so no one stole my class ring or my dad's old wedding band after all..." That house was less than half the size of this one though, so now there's more than double the "crap." I didn't have six cars then either. There are talks of retiring out of state, well, closer to pipe dreams really. But we'd want to go far enough such that we'd need to either sell the cars and rebuy them or get a car hauler in addition to a gooseneck moving truck or semi with a trailer. Haven't priced it all out yet since it's a pipe dream, but it wouldn't surprise me if rebooting would be cheaper or on par with having everything transported. Trouble with transport is the possibility for damaged goods...

Yeah, that's how it went when I moved here. Realized I could make everything nice & neat in the garage with the proper stuff, didn't have it or the money for said stuff and so small piles it was until the shelves I have now went up. Now I've got a handle on most of it, but am still guilty of buying something only to find out I already had one. "Yep, I knew I had that. Figures I find it NOW." One such part is an A/C condensate drain elbow thing for my K1500. I know damn well I bought one, just don't know where it fucked off to.

I figure if I ever move out of this place, the only smart way to do it is hire an auctioneer to liquidate it, and whatever doesn't sell gets donated or landfilled. Take the money and if I find that I actually needed a something I used to own, just buy one. More likely someone will wonder about the bad smell some years from now and then do the same after the biohazard is cleaned up.

You know, I never considered an auctioneer. That could be a great idea...

I refer to my garages and parts storage rooms as an organized mess. My wife keeps reminding me that when I die, she will sell it for whatever is offered or it goes in a dumpster.
Same with my models, watches books, car magazines, tools and whatever else. SAD.

Hopefully this scenario is not something we need to be concerned about for a LONG LONG time but perhaps you can set up something now that your stuff is donated to people that can really appreciate it and make good use of the items!

Might be in our best interest to sell or pass the stuff off BEFORE that happens. Come to think of it, that's how I got my Town Car. The original owner was 94 and despite being sharp & spry, he know what was coming and wanted to lessen the load on his family as much as he could. I'll do the same, provided I go out in a similar fashion.

Back to the truck for a second:
I started it up on Monday to move it to the street so I could drive the Lincoln yesterday. Well, it started like normal but idled rough and needed throttle input to smooth out. While holding the RPM steady at ~1,200, I noticed lots of black smoke. That's new. Greeat, more shit to troubleshoot. Initial suspect is the ECT, but I'm curious, can injectors stick open? It was running fabulously two days or so before.
