Yeah... about those 4.30s, anybody know what color or where I can get a speedometer gear to make those play nice? Though it is kind of nice seeing the needle freak out to 80 when I'm only doing 50.

need the 7 spline output shaft first. no speedo gear will work with the 8 spline output shaft. I have 4.10 or 4.30 in the Mark and an 8 spline output shaft and it's still reading high with the 23-tooth gear.

Do I need to worry about the speedometer cable snapping? My dad said he's worried about it, and even if it reads just a bit high, would it make sense to switch to a different speedo-gear just to reduce the stress on it?

You need to have your speedometer recalibrated. Anything after like 3.73s is just not accurate with the good speedometer gears. The 23 tooth gear which I believe is the black gear, self destruct. Have your speedometer calibrated for a purple gear. 21 tooth. Your cable is not going to snap.

It's a '91 i don't think it has a speedo cable. It should be electronic.

the VSS in the trans is turned by said speedo gear. I think there's some ECM shenanigans (calibrated resistors) that allow plugging in something in a port on the driver side inner fender area to "recalibrate" the speedo for specific gears, but I could be mistaken.

No ECM nonsense on this. The output of the VSS should go straight to the speedo cluster for readout. Not like a more newer car that you can putz with the ECM tune to compensate for this stuff. The black gear will make it read right but many people only get a few thousand miles from them before they strip out.

So... if I get a black one it *will* self destruct relatively quickly, but it reads right. But if I get a purple gear, will it read a little high, but still be usable for quite a while?

May just leave it alone if it's gonna be that big of a damn hassle.

you can also get one of those reduction gears and plug that in (contemplating that if/when the 23tooth in my Mark is eaten up)

Got a GPS. Got a whole bunch of vids. 4 posts coming at ya!

Here's the new exhuast sound video. Since the Oxygen sensors were finally hooked up it's mellowed the sound a bit, but the revs are as mean as ever! No drone at all, at any speed. Very civilized around town, all sound is out past the axle. But when you get on it... let's just say I've had a guy on a harley going the other way stare really hard at my car.

This will go in the official exhaust thread too. Soon.

Okay, this is a longer one, me driving around, sound inside the car with the windows up. After I turn the camera around to the front, there was a white F-250 that tried to get ahead of me and ended up tucking in behind me to pass the semi.

Then when the camera turned sideways near the end, the traffic snafu was a pallet obliterated all over the roadway, so I had to do my best to steer through the debris.
