    CVGT speaker build up/setup

So I figured since I've got the entire interior out, I'm going to build my sound system up. Currently it has just dash speakers and rear deck speakers. I put some JBL GTOs in the rear and it's got some Jensens in the dash. I know the dash speakers are slightly oversized (previous owner) It used to have pioneers in the rear but I read a lot of good reviews on these JBLs so I bought em. So what I'm planning to do is get some Polk Audio 6501 for the door speakers and wire them to the rear of the car (already ran the wiring and shit.) then run the dash speakers to the rear as well, where I'm going to have two channel crossovers that will basically use the dash speakers as tweeters. I'm running the whole system off a 4 channel 1000w amp, If I want a sub; I'll probably get another amp and run two 8" subs. I want my dash speakers to handle the mids to highs and the door and rear speakers to handle the mids to lows. I want a "deep sound" setup, that makes no sense but that's the best way I can describe it.

I have a good headunit now but I don't like it. So I was trying to find another head unit that looks good and fitting to the old/modern throw of the car interior, send the signals to my amp and has an aux port on it. I'd ideally like to put an aux port inside the center console that I plan to build in the future. I'm also doing this as low buck but high quality as possible. I've never liked the sound system in my car, it sounds very very clear but had no depth to any of the music. Which is what I hate.

Nick's 2010 Challenger R/T and my buddies Mark LT pickup have had the only two good depth sound systems I've come across that I liked.

From what you're describing, you'll just need a clear head unit. The speakers are what really matter to get the depth (that and good crossover/amp tuning). Also, get some of those Boom-Mat or XTC speaker baffles for the door speakers for sure. It will help protect them from the elements that do get past the dew wipes, dust, and dirt. They don't really help with bass reproduction as some will claim, but they work great for keeping the speakers clean.

Automotive interiors are an acoustic nightmare.

JBL Power Series speakers come as close as I've ever found to reproducing a warm, laid back sound without over exaggerating ear-fatiguing highs and mids. You'll get some of that, but less than the competition and most can be tuned away with a good equalizer setting. They're pretty affordable too. If you want better you're going to have to go competition grade and spend $500+/pair. I've got those 6x9's in my rear deck and 6.5's in my doors. I put JBL GTO's in the dash because I couldn't find the power series ones, they suck. So bad I just disconnected them. Also running a JBL GTO 5EZ amp I think along with a power series 10" sub. Good enough for me. If I built a better enclosure I'd get better & more punchy bass but I like it enough to not dick with it any more.

As for a decent and not so ugly receiver, I recommend the Sony MEX-GS810. Check it out here:

Alpine CDA-9855 looks way cooler than that Sony any day. 10x as many features also

I will give u that with USB. I could personally do without HD Radio, I aint paying for that shit. That Sony does have 5v preouts also. The Alpine 4. I remember Sony head units were not so desirable 8 years ago. I am not sure about now, I have been out of the loop. I used to obsess over car audio.

You do get used to the GlideTouch

HD radio is free. Plus you get extra channels per station depending on the station. I was a fan of Alpines the generation before glide touch. I used to have a CDA-9831 & 35. I loved the biolite display and powerful eq settings. Did not like how my ipod's play list reset with every flip of the ignition switch. Those things are 10 years old now though. I'm a legacy dude, I need buttons for presets and stuff. Sony wasn't my first choice but after reviewing all the stuff that was out there that's what I ended up with. It's not half bad at all and aside from the shitty display and illuminated knob it looks pretty good in the slot and sounds good.

I'd really like one that doesn't look like a 1970s disco on the front. Its a shame the stock ones are all old and dying, they look proper and don't annoy me. I need a tuner and an aux input, I don't need 47 layers of menus all controlled from one knob.

Did you ever go about integrating an aux input into a stock style radio? And or RCA outputs

the stock CD player in the Mark VII had an aux input added. Unfortunately it got to the point where that was the only functional part. The display went, the tuner went, and the CD went. I tried fixing it after it had been repaired twice, managed to get the display back but the laser transport was dicked and I never did figure out what ailed the tuner. thats about the point I gave up.

The JBL and premium sound units effectively have RCA outs, just needs to be brought out to the proper connector type. The tape decks that could be paired with a cd changer are cake to make work with aux in, but they still die. Car stereos in particular are a real pain in the ass to work on, too much crap jammed into not enough space.

Those radios with Aux inputs exist, they frequently turn up on ebay. I'd like a no frills radio either. I thought about trying to integrate a McIntosh from a GT90 in but it just wasn't worth it. The only ones that don't have that garbage are $800+ due to their competition status and high quality ingredients. IMO a car environment isn't worth all that money. Why the companies can't just let us have that look but with standard internals is beyond me. Worse still is that single din radios are becoming harder to find. Also, now they're going back to integrating radios into the dashboard so who knows what that means for the future of aftermarket.
