Any opinion on the large spin-on type external filters?
spin on filters typically work better, since most of them have some sort of internal by-pass. When the pressure gets too high or the filter becomes a restriction, the filter will automatically allow the fluid to by-pass. These filter set ups are usually more expensive and more complicated to plumb and set up.

External filters are not necessary since the automatic transmission is a sealed set up. The internal filter does as good job of keep debris out of the pump and honestly if you get a lot of debris in system, its time for rebuild anyway.

The best thing you can do for an AOD is put some sort of magnet in the pan to catch some of the smaller metal/clutch debris.

Could a lazy person just stick a strong magnet to the outside of the bottom of the pan?

you could, dont know how long it would stay on though, however the best magnets ive found are actually from hard drives they use some stupidly strong magnets used to stick them to my tool cart

Rare earth. Neodymium probably, or samarium cobalt. They are some strong SOB's. I have one at work that I use for parts fishing occasionally.

I've used hard drive magnets on oil plugs... it works. Never thought to put one on the trans pan though. Would probably work there too.
