faulty starter solenoid on 86 cv

my starter solenoid went out today i replaced and its fine now but has anybody else ever had their panther"s starter keep engaging after you turn the key? according the tune up guy at the ford dealer its a common thing for it to happen when they arent replaced.

Yep, common enough. I've had it happen. They stick and don't disengage after you release the key from start.

yep...when my starter was on the way out, you could hear the drive spinning but it wasn't extending out and grabbing the flywheel or something because it would just whine like crazy - even after you'd stop trying to start it. new starter = all good

mine does that all the time. doesn't throw the gear out to engage the flywheel and will usually kick on the second or third attempt. Still haven't had any issues with the solenoid sticking though. Works great.

The relays weld themselves together when they're dying and the starter keeps running. The thing that most people aren't told is that the relay often does this because the starter is going bad and drawing too much current. If it burns another relay out in a week or so, replace the starter and the relay and it should fix the issue for a very long time.

It's scary when the engine continues to crank after the key is in your pocket. Luckily, I had a rubber mallet, on rap, and it was all good.

This is why I have marine terminals on my battery. No tools required to disconnect the battery in case of emergency.

i was mad and terrified at the same time when it happened. i am also looking into upgrading to a smaller starter off a 5.0 Explorer. how much different is the smaller PMGR starters to wire up?

It does make a horrible noise when that happens... Ive seen bad ignition switches cause a similar problem.

there's a wiring diagram kicking around here somewhere with instructions on how to do it.
