glad you got the bulbs figured out - older box ones do twist out but no more than a 30 degree turn.
Its not unusual for the bulb to pop out of its base... its happened to me many times. Then you have to dig the base out of the socket with some pliers or something, and make sure the lights are off so you dont short anything.
If you still want to remove the brake lamp housing, you have to remove the whole Q-panel extension from the backside (10mm nuts) then remove the lamp from the extention/housing once its out. I learned that swapping my LTD tails in
Dont forget there are 2 bulbs in each tail lamp, and if one is out, the other will usually still blink with the flasher, but not the turn signal. Sometimes that will throw you off.
